The National Collegiate Athletic Association was formed in 1906 as non-profit organization with the purpose of protecting students and setting official guidelines for sports. Since the formation of the NCAA in 1906, there has always been controversy of whether sports should be associated with universities and colleges. There have been numerous arguments attacking the NCAA suggesting that student-athletes are merely moneymakers for the institutions, rather than students, by earning millions of dollars in revenue each year in this commercialized industry. Academic enthusiasts contribute to the argument by emphasizing the importance of more money being invested into the athletic department rather then other departments throughout the school. However, these cons of the NCAA are heavily out weighed by the pros, as it’s proven that once schools enter the big time sports of NCAA they rarely leave it. Coltfelther supports this theory as he states that of the top 100 schools playing football in 1920, only…

In 1998, Communities for Equality (CFE) filed a lawsuit against the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) citing that they were not in compliance with Title IX and there was not equity between boys and girls sports in High School. Over nine years later in 2007, CFE had won their lawsuit, which made it all the way the Supreme Court and the MHSAA was forced to switch the season of the sports and tournament schedules to comply with Title IX and equity in interscholastic sports. The CFE vs. MHSAA ruling has had a negative effect on participation, officiating, and overall interest for the sports involved. Athletic Directors, along with the MHSAA have to find ways to increase interest for the sports. This study follows up with both positive and negative results of the ruling from various school athletic directors, high school coaches, college coaches and representatives from the MHSAA on a variety of issues that are involved with interscholastic sports. Possible solutions to the main concerns are answered in the conclusion of the study.…

An athletic administrator there are many student-athlete issues that will arise that athletic directors will need to be prepared for. The first issues I think that an athletic director would need to prepare to face are issues regarding the code of conduct. In conjunction with the school’s code of conduct, the athletics department code of conduct should be familiarized by all student-athletes and parents. All student-athletes should be accountable for his/her actions and should be enforced by the school principal and the athletic director. An athletics orientation will be held before the start of each academic school year stressing the importance of the school and athletics code of conduct. Athletic orientation should include the student-athlete and parents that will cover expectations, rules, regulations, and eligibility requirements, which lead me to my next issue that athletic directors may face.…

“Fairness, academics and equitable competition” is the mission statement for the National Collegiate Athletic Association. The National Collegiate Athletic Association, also known as the NCAA, is an association that regulates major areas of college athletics for members and student athletes. The organization is defined as a non-profit, and as proclaimed by the president Dr. Mark A. Emmert, “…is committed to providing opportunity for more than 430,000 college students who compete annually in intercollegiate athletics” (NCAA). Recently the NCAA published their financial report for the 2011-2012 fiscal years. The report features a pie chart displaying a revenue breakdown, and distribution of revenue breakdown. I will examine the economic impact in these categories and consider how a possible change in distribution of the revenue to players affects the NCAA purpose and amateurism of the sport.…

It is hard to consider people who neglect to act in the face of extreme cruelty, especially those who witnessed the events of the Holocaust without intervening, as average humans. However, recent sociological experiments have revealed that most people will witness an emergency without intervening due to altruistic inertia or pluralistic ignorance. In the case of genocide, dehumanization is crucial to the ability of ordinary people to commit or observe unspeakable acts of violence against another. Genocides such as the Holocaust occur due to the nature of most people to be bystanders and the ability of the perpetrators to depict their victims as subhuman.…

As early as the third grade, I remember being involved in sports. Whether it was volleyball, basketball, or dance I have been given the privilege to play on many teams. The life of a young athlete is great, however, it can become very stressful. At all ages an athlete is forced to cope with school, sports, and a social life. Along with all of that, athletes are expected to deal with extra stress and even stricter rules. Over the years I have realized all student-athletes are treated differently and are held to a higher standard. (1)…
