Introduction and History
Trade Joe is one of the grocery stores in America, and it is popular because it provides natural organic food and some special food, which could not be found in other grocery stores. The Natural Dairy Products and Dairy Smart Inc. are companies that sell ice cream and daily products. They offered high quality products to Trade Joe as intermediary and they bought products from suppliers and manufacturers. When Trade Joe was a small grocery store, the NDP started to provide ice cream to Trade Joe and attracted many customers because of NDP’s ice cream reputation. Firstly, the Trade Joe had long-term partnerships with NDP and Dairy Smart Inc., and they maintained healthy relationships for many years. However, the Trade Joe violated contracts unilaterally, and the author pointed out that Trade Joe was also “intentional interference with contractual relations; unjust enrichment, breach of contract, and acting in bad faith” (Echeverria, 2004). Therefore, the Trade Joe’s behavior was unethical, and it should not use these methods to achieve its purpose, which damaged interests of NDP and Dairy Smart Inc.
Secondly, the Trade Joe should not compel suppliers and manufacturers to refuse to offer products for NDP and Dairy Smart Inc. because the suppliers and manufacturers had their own contracts with NDP and Dairy Smart Inc. The Trade Joe did not have rights to interfere with their contracts. The Trade Joe also did not notify nor communicate with NDP and Dairy Smart Inc. that it bought products directly from suppliers and manufacturers. This resulted in considerable economic losses for NDP and Dairy Smart Company. Therefore, it was an ethical dilemma.
