Trade Winds: A Case Study
This article summered that the EL has the potential to be the strongest EL so far. The other two strong EL’s occurred in 1982 and 1997-98. They haven’t been able to monitor other EL’s until satellites were created that monitor the progress of EL’s. Because we do not have a lot of data from previous years of monitoring EL, predictions are not always as accurate as they would be if data had been monitored for a longer time. The trade* winds usually flow east to west*. However, EL reverses the cycle, which affects the food chain. One of the main organisms that may be affected by these trade winds are anchovies. There is speculation it will cause the population of anchovies to go down. Since fish, birds, and mammals all feed off of anchovies,
this disruption will cause major problems in the food chain. These trade winds will create warmer water which has affected the flow of nutrients in the waters off of Peru.
