Traditional Gender Roles

“We’ve begun to raise daughters more like sons… but few have the courage to raise our sons more like daughters” by Gloria Steinem. Gender roles have begun as we evolve. For example, women now can work outside of their home like in factory, construction, become police officers or firefighters, and are in politics events as well as in the military. However it wasn’t like this back then. Traditional gender roles have a positive and negative affect as our society grows, even though we have overcome some of these obstacles, we are still fighting against them because traditional roles are still relevant today as it was back then.

For example in the story “My Name” by Sandra Cisneros, her great grandmother was a strong independent women that wanted to choose her own path to the future. The gender role for men, at that time was they got to pick any women they desire like if it was something you simply buy at the grocery store. In the story it saids “Until my great grandfather threw a sack over her head and carried her off. The story goes she never forgave him. She looked out the window her whole life, the way so many women sit their sadness on an elbow.” It mentions how the great grandmother life was chosen for her she didn't have plan to married, she wanted to be free to live her life to the fullest. She had dreams. But instead she had to settle down live like a prisoner in her own home, never felt
She state that “We were very typically socialized as a “young lady” and a “boy being a boy”. Globally, childhood politeness lessons are gender asymmetrical. We socialize girls to take turns, listen more carefully, not curse and resist interrupting in ways we do not expect boys to.”I agree to every single word of that men are treated differently than women we may not realize it often but it happens.
