"The Tragedy of Julius Caesar" tells about the death of Caesar and what happened after his death. Caesar was stabbed 22 times. He died after the last stabbing. After Caesar died a war developed. After the play ends there are many questions about the theme of the play. One would say it was fate vs. freewill. One would say it was everyone isn't what he or she seems. One would say it was rhetoric and power. One will talk about all three in this essay. "The Tragedy of Julius Caesar" raises many questions about fate vs. freewill. Julius Caesar was the main component of this theme. In the saying "in life there
are no coincidences" it saying that there is no such thing as luck. In the play Julius Caesar said "Men at sometime were masters of their fates. The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars, But in ourselves, that we are underlings" (I.ii.140142). This shows that Julius Caesar thought about the fate and freewill of people. "The Tragedy of Julius Caesar" brings about the theme of everyone isn't what they seem. Many people aren't how they seem in many ways. Like the old quote" don't judge a book by its cover". You should never judge before knowing. Like how Caesar thought Brutus was the best ever. Then Brutus went and helped kill Caesar. In the play Cicero said "Men may construe things after their fashion, Clean from the purpose of the things themselves" (I.iii.3435). In other word you could say "don't get to close to a person before getting to know them". Julius Caesar gives detailed account to the relationship between rhetoric and power. The ability to make things happen by words alone is the most powerful type of authority. It is shown the Caesar has that type of power when he says " Do this,' it is performed," says Antony, who attaches a similar weight to Octavius's words toward the end of the play (I.ii.12). Power can destroy a person. Which it did to Caesar. Power is not that important but to some it's everything. In conclusion, the theme that one chooses is what one thinks is the most important parts of the play. One would say a play has one good theme. Well one just brought you 3 good themes. These could be the best themes in people's opinion. Hopefully, this essay has taught you more about the play and the theme of it.
