In order to acquire a more advanced knowledge on training programs, throughout this term our class has been studying the ‘Training Principles’ to help improve ourselves in the sport of Aquathlon as we are to perform a 2km swim and 200m swim. This report will discuss the knowledge of the training principles, specificity, FITT and overload as well as a reflection on my performance.
2.0 Event Description
The sport of aquathlon involves two continuous stages, swimming and followed by running. An aquathlon can be commonly referred to as an aquathon. The distance in which an athlete swims and run may vary, for example the ITU “Warm water” standard distances is a 2.5km run, 1000m swim followed by another 2.5km run. If the temperature is below 22° it then becomes wetsuit-mandatory with a 1000m swim and a single 5km run. Lastly “long course” distances are 2000m swim and a 10km run.
During this term our class has been tasked with training for an aquathlon. The aquathlon involves a 2km run, transitioning and a 200m swim with the run before due to convenience. In order to achieve this to our uppermost capability a training plan devised by our teachers was used to improve our cardiovascular fitness. This fitness plan focused on continuous, fartlek and interval training and went for a duration of 6 weeks.
