Two groups dominated this early immigration. They were the Irish and German immigrants. The Irish immigrants migrated straight to the United States after the disaster of the potato famine. They settled in large east coast cities like New York and Boston. Soon after migrating over many contributions were made by the Irish. The establishment of the Catholic Church was one contribution organized by these settlers. Another was the establishment of parochial schools. Grunt work such as digging canals and laying track for the railroads was completed by the men. The woman of Irish descent replaced the farm girls of New England in the textile industry and soon become domestic servants for the rich. The Irish faced a great deal of xenophobia.
