Diaz blames the “standardized test” system for the way teachers teach and what materials need to be covered. There are a lot of “rules” college students will break when writing in college. Truth be told, it’s been a few years since the last time I walked into a writing extensive course like English 1302. The last time that I sat in front of a computer, and slaved away for hours trying to create the perfect paper was in 2011, during my first semester at Texas Tech. It was English 101, and people had that it’s a class that I should not take lightly, but of course I thought I knew better. Let’s just say that I figured out, I was not the greatest writer in the world after all, but high school definitely made me think I was. Before I entered into my first semester of college level English, it was not unordinary for me to write a paper that received applause from teachers all the way through senior year. I wrote essays on books, such as the “The Great Gatsby” to critically breaking apart poems. One assignment that I remember vividly was my critical summary over Robert Frost’s Poem, “The Road Less Traveled”. Alas, those easy days are gone. Most of my time now is spent typing up emails to staff and teachers. Since I have been enrolled at Texas Tech, I have worked in Texas Tech’s School of Law in the Administrative Office. Much my work is behind a screen typing up emails. It has taught me a lot, so I feel as though I’ve become pretty proficient when it comes to writing up formal messages or relaying information in a professional way. I believe that I have a decent amount of experience when it comes to my writing abilities, and hopefully that will continue to grow throughout my time in this class.…

After reading the article “The Composing Processes of Unskilled College Writers” by Sondra Perl I have been forced to understand how writers write. The writing process is a situation that is approached from various angles. In the writing process techniques and sequences from person to person are often diverse, but it is one of the ways one may be expressed. The goal of Perl study was to “see how unskilled writers write, can their writing process be analyzed in a systematic, replicable manner, and what does an increased understanding of their process suggest about nature of composing in general and the manner in which writing is taught in schools.” (191) With Perl performing this observation and collecting several amounts of data I decided to perform an observation on my writing by paying close attention to how I write. With analyzing I realized that my writing process have a very sequential pattern. I also have noticed that many acts of critical planning and editing are carried out through many of my writings and it has had a negative effect on the majority of my writing masterpieces. At first read of this article, I realize how important this essay is for understanding the complexities of how many students must negotiate when writing for the first time. Improving my ability to become a great writer and write grade-A college papers is an important goal I hope to achieve by taking this class. My personal goals overall for this class is to gain the necessary elements and principles of writing, in order to further help my skills as a writer so it may lead to future success. Kopke, Lisa K. Hawkins, Gary A. Troia, and Natalie G. Olinghouse inform teachers about the role of writing in Common Core curriculum and offer advice for its implementation. They first highlight the importance of writing in relation to professional success, and discuss the current lack of students with passable writing skills, observing that Common Core does not sufficiently emphasize writing. The authors next provide strategies to remedy this problem, and close by stressing that they hope the Common Core is not perceived as difficulty but as an opportunity for professional development. The authors’ emphasis on students’ writing skills in relation to Common Core requirements engages the readers’ sympathy with their dilemma. Over the course of the past three months, I have had the distinct pleasure of testing my writing capabilities through the Introduction to College Writing course. I have always had a passion for writing in all forms, but in previous years, the course work in grade-level English classes have been unchallenging of my writing ability. I have been heavily involved in Bonneville High School’s newspaper through journalism since my freshman year. This allowed me to strengthen my writing capability as I was drafting throughout the entire school year. I have never truly had to apply myself until I enrolled in English 101. Since the beginning of the class, I have faced various hardships while writing essays in unfamiliar styles, such as drafting a response to a scholarly article and synthesizing opposing perspectives. Transitioning from the middle school to the high school was definitely a hard task to do. I was constantly worried about getting lost, and not being able to find my way around. When I first arrived at the high school, I was very intimidated by the size of the high school and a number of hallways and classrooms in the building.
