Like other cities in rapidly industrializing Vietnam, fast-growing Ho Chi Minh City should improve its public transport system in terms of both quantity and quality. According to a report from HCMC Department of Transport, its population holds 8% of the country’s one but the number of motorbikes holds 15% of the total of the country. Reducing private vehicle by improving public transport is very necessary for reducing many server problems such as traffic jams, vehicle accidents, pollution, etc.
First, many public vehicles are too old. They are not attractive to customers. They also cause pollution. They are not accessible for the disabled, the elderly and children.
Second, there are more and more traffic jams in the city centre as well as in many urban areas. If there were more efficient public vehicles, there would be less private vehicles. Also, the government should widen narrow roads.
Third, traffic accidents have been increasing and becoming a server problem. HCMC is in the top 5 Cities having the most dangerous accidents in many years.
Last but not least, because of the city’s urbanization and modernization strategy its citizens need more and more public transport vehicle. Today, provincial people keep moving to the city for many reasons. The need to travel from the city centre to the urban areas and nearby provinces is getting bigger.
To demand the huge need of the city people in using public transportation as well as minimize traffic problems, HCMC needs a better improvement for its public transport system. This is to ensure a sustainable development.
