Over time, transportation has shown to have an incredible impact on the United States. It has revealed to bring about economic and social changes in various ways. In the late eighteenth century ancient methods of traveling were still in use in America and it was often very slow. Americans were aware that if transportation advancement occurred, it would potentially increase foreign trade, increase land values as well as strengthen the American economy. In the mid 1800s it has been determined that transportation advancement has a drastic effect on our lives even today.…
Trams were a cheaper and much comfortable alternative to animal drawn carts/carriages. They were only in their early stages of development at the turn of the century and as such, weren’t yet electric and were instead pulled by a cable or even by horses.…

While driving through Los Angeles it is difficult to appreciate that several of the streets that Angelinos drive on today were once the main arteries and veins of the city. Streets such as San Vicente Boulevard, Venice Boulevard, and the famous Santa Monica Boulevard are a few that owe their beginnings to the electric trolley. In 1887, the first appearance of electric trolleys mobilized Los Angeles in a way that would not cease. Within several years railways such as the Pasadena and Los Angeles Railway and the Los Angeles Pacific Railway would merge to form the Pasadena & Pacific Railways. Not many would have thought that the fate of those individual street railways erected in Los Angeles in due time would become part a large systematic network.…

Transportation was a viable avenue for England to rid itself of criminals. Many individuals and complete families where transported, first, to the American colonies and then to Australia and its surrounding islands of Van Diemen’s Land. Through this type of punishment the United Kingdom hoped to rid itself of variants and to begin colonization of a new colony in a distant land in hopes of further expanding the empire. By expanding the empire through transportation these convicts brought with them traditions and customs familiar to them, some positive and some negative.…
25% of the land is recreation, with only 8% of the land being free unowned land. Most of New York City is residential, but only 12% of the city is multi residential, and an extremely small amount of residential buildings are commercial and residential. Less than 4% of New York City is commercial, yet 4% is industrial land. 7% of New York City is covered by public facilities, such as hospitals, school, nursing. Transportation is one of the most important structures in New York City, and it didn’t take up much space. It also, only costed 2.75. T.W. Sanchez (2008) explains that Oscar Ornati was one of the first to publish research on transportation and poor, which was released in New York City in the late 1960’s. Ornati discussed the challenges that those in poverty have when dealing with the public transportation system, including the difficulty those have when seeking employment.. While his research was well, his location was not. There is and has always been a very large difference between the public transportation in New York City and other U.S. cities, New York has always been ahead of it’s time. This meaning that Ornatis research was unable to represent all of the U.S. and their cities transportation programs.…
. These obstacles are things like housing, transportation, and other basic necessities (Ehrenreich 2001). For instance, the working poor often do not have a permanent residence or family to stay with while they save money, and cannot afford a large deposit for an apartment. This means they have to settle with weekly hotel rooms, which end up being more expensive, yet are the only affordable option because they don't require large down payments. Transportation is another common factor; if one is a member of the working poor they likely do not have their own car and have to rely on public transportation. Depending on the location it is do-able, but public transportation in our society is still not widely-available in every city. One study shows…
During the 1970s when the NYC Subway was designed New York City was all about dirty, dangerous, and destitute, with pimps and prostitutes populating the streets, an economic collapse and a crime-filled subway system, the streets of Manhattan were gritty and dark. The subways were covered everywhere with ugly graffiti and they were unreliable and the subway system became rife with crime as riders became the victims of rapes and robberies. While the city was on the verge of bankruptcy New York was entering a period of difficulty and falling tax receipts, as the city’s economy was rocked by the decline of manufacturing and the flight of the white middle class to the suburbs many New Yorkers were out of jobs. Homeless man sleeping in the streets…
They call it the Metropolitan Transportation Authority. The MTA New York City Transit is the largest public transportation system in the world with 470 reported passenger station, plus 230 miles of routes translating into 660 miles of revenue track, and a total of 842 miles including non-revenue trackage. It runs 24 hours a day and all year long and is one of the most notable transit systems in the world because of such running hours. It is well- known as the subway, which means an underground operation, but about 45 percent of the subway system runs on aboveground. It includes steel or cast iron elevated structures, concrete viaducts, embankments, open cuts and surface routes. The subways are very import to civilians to get from point A to point B since many don’t own vehicles because of such busy traffic, it would be faster , easier , plus cheaper to use city transportation. The New York subways are among the ten top busiest systems in the world.…
The Underground Railroad was not a real railroad. It didn’t have train cars, tracks, or any form of a schedule. The Underground Railroad was a secret network of people all over the United States, who operated in the dark of the night. Their mission was a risky one_ to help runaway slaves escape from slavery in the Southern states.…
