A transportation problem basically deals with the problem, which aims to find the best way to fulfill the demand of n demand points using the capacities of m supply points. While trying to find the best way, generally a variable cost of shipping the product from one supply point to a demand point or a similar constraint should be taken into consideration.

A distribution-type problem in which supplies of goods that are held at various locations are to be distributed to other receiving locations. The CoalCo company produces coal at four mines and ships it to four power plants (P1-P4). The cost per ton (in Rs. 00’s) of producing coal and the production capacity (in tons) for each mine are known. The cost (in Rs. 00’s) of shipping a ton of coal from a mine to each plant is available as well. The following table provides the data. P1 9 7 5 3 110 P2 15 15 5 6 115 P3 8 14 11 8 135 P4 10 12 12 11 130 Capacity 125 100 150 120 Cost 50 57 55 61
