Differences between tour operators and travel agents

A travel agent is someone who books flights, cruises and tours.
A tour operator is a company which specializes in the planning and operation of pre-planned vacations, which are usually sold to the public through travel agents.

The most common example of a tour operator’s product would be a flight on a charter airline plus a transfer from the airport to a hotel and the services of a local representative, all for one price. Niche tour operators may specialize in destinations e.g. Bahamas, activities and experiences e.g. skiing, or a combination thereof.
