William Stafford is the author of this eerie poem called Traveling through the dark. there is a lot of different claims to this one poem but the best one is the claim about technology and mankind. The conflict is technology is taking over the mindset of humans. The character in the poem is an older man faced with a hard decision. This decision is showed every day. This poem uses the word ‘dark’ as something that can be uses as how people feel when something curl is about take place. In the same sentence, the older man in the poem founded a dead deer on the side of the road. As well as many, people would just push this over into the river but this poem point something different. In the next stanza, it states “it is usually best to roll them into the canyon…”. This type of thinking is the worst kind to have. I believe William Stafford wanted people to learn that this mentality will kill nature but save technology. Extinction is starting to become increasingly relevant to society. When you must swerve from something, it can cause an accident. In the poem, it trying to say the percentage of deer’s deaths are higher in this time. He describes the car as purring like a cat. When cats purr, they are happy or having pleasure. The car can be expressing how the older man is happy or have pleasure with doing this horrible deed.
