Trayvon Martin: Article Analysis
These articles both focus on the sale of the gun used to shoot and kill Trayvon Martin, the articles are featured on the ABC and News.com:

News.com.au is owned by News Corp Australia, which is in turn owned by Rupert Murdoch.
The website is an online only news source, the site reaches approximately 5.5million Australian (according to it’s own sources) and has a team of 30 journalists that aim to “deliver news fast, and to the point”- something that is particularly important for online audiences.

The ABC was founded in 1929 and is a government funded outlet in 1983 the Australian Broadcasting Corporation Act created a legislation that would secure its editorial independence. The ABC is a trusted Australian news source that exists on multiple

News.com uses emotional language to try and illicit an emotional response from the audience, the article uses many direct quotes and verbs to paint a picture of the situation. The article implies a clear bias against George Zimmerman, and clearly favours the respectfully deceased Trayvon Martin and his family. The bias is clear before the article itself even begins, the title alone (“taunts family”) implies Zimmerman shows no remorse over Martins death. This writing style continues through the article naming Zimmerman as a “wannabe cop” and pointing out inconsistencies in Zimmerman’s statements and actions.

ABC doesn’t use as much emotional language as news.com and the style comes across as more professional, despite this as the content itself has an emotional background there is still naturally emotion in the article. The article only briefly mentions the controversy surrounding the sale, placing it’s focus less on the events that led to the sale and more on the sale of the gun, of course this history is still talked about- as it is what gives the article some human interest. Moreover, only one direct quote of Zimmerman is utilised by the writer and the articles style comes across as a

Another charity named ‘The Trayvon Martin Foundation’ was also started by Martins family in his memory.

Overall the ABCS style does not pick a clear side for the reader, the article instead reads more like a report on the transpired events. While news.com clearly uses the emotional aspects of this sale to further their article, and picks a clear side in the events- the article tone therefore comes across as more personal.

Both outlets reported on the story effectively: the ABC is clear and direct with information, and manages to keep the article concise with key points outlined at the top of the article. News.com tells a different story to the ABC, while it does report on the sale relatively effectively (although the information provided is outdated) the article is focused on Zimmerman’s actions and relies on emotion to drive the story

We know that the only items retrieved from Martin’s person were a bag of Skittles, a can of iced tea, and some money, so unless Zimmerman felt he was in danger of contracting a deadly form of diabetes or a lethal cavity, he has more explaining to do. But whether the item is as innocuous as a bag of candy—or, as in Amadou Diallo’s case, a wallet—the assumption is that the natural state of black men is armed and dangerous. If Martin was so threatening, why didn’t Zimmerman wait for the police to arrive, particularly after being told not to follow the suspect? (“We don’t need you to do that,” the dispatcher told him.) Why have three witnesses come forward to say that in the moments before the shooting they heard crying that stopped as soon as the bullet fired? Was Martin crying in anger? And what if he was? Would he not have a right to be angry that a man was stalking him for no reason? And if Martin was the aggressor, how did he manage to get a man over a hundred pounds heavier than himself to the ground? What injuries did Zimmerman sustain that would lead us to believe there was a struggle that left him in the grip of a life-and-death situation? The 911 tapes that have been released suggest that the two shots that were fired, one from a distance, the other the fatal one from close…

As I think about the shooting death of Trayvon Martin, a 17 year old young African-American male, who lived in the state of Florida. I reflect on the fact that I am a mother of a young African-American male, with this in mind this tragedy affects me indirectly. Trayvon Martin walking alone the streets of Florida, dressed with a Hood on, with a bag of skittles and drinking on a ice tea, might have been thinking how wonderful it is to be alive, or what a beautiful day it is. Who knows what was going on in his mind. Did he ever think this would be his last day on earth? I doubt it. It's disturbing to know that Mr. Martin lost his life due to the perception of his shooter, with no questions asked, but these questions come to my mind. What are the perceptions of African-American males in America and our local communities? How can we change the negative perceptions into a positive perception?…

As the Jewett murder story gained greater popularity in the penny press, the more traditional papers found themselves struggling to equalize their sense of journalistic against the drama that had become the talk of the town. “The Evening Post of June 8, for example, called it ‘disgusting’ and ‘disagreeable,’ covering it only to satisfy a ‘public excitement.’ (Cohen 26)” This became outrageous when the collapse to discern involved a wanton disrespect for human life, which ended up leading to manslaughter. Killing is immoral. Some people are afraid to read about murder because they are afraid of blood and guts, but others think it was interesting and uncommon like to discuss about in the…

Trayvon Martin’s murder occurred around 7:25 PM of February 26, 2012 on his way home from a convenience store. (CNN Wire staff, 2012) On site, Zimmerman called police to report a suspicious person. The police made a point to tell Zimmerman that following him was no necessary. Record show that, around the time, Martin had been on the phone with his girl friend who heard the beginning of the confrontation. She told reporters that Martin seemed terrified because the man was following him, that he had even asked the man why he was doing so before the conversation abruptly ended. (ABC News, 2012) Zimmerman’s statement claims that Trayvon Martin attacked him, punched him in the face and beat him. (CNN Wire staff, 2012) Neighbors started calling in to report screaming and gunshots; later, audio experts reported to CNN that the cry for help was not Zimmerman, but actually young Trayvon Martin. (CNN Wire staff, 2012) When on the scene, police found Zimmerman with a broken nose and a cut on the back of his head, suggesting that Martin did, in fact, attack Zimmerman. When found dead, unarmed Martin was only carrying a small amount of cash, Skittles, and sweet tea – nothing suggesting that he was looking for any trouble. Weeks later, Police Chief Bill Lee stated that, “Zimmerman was not charged because there are no grounds to disprove his (Zimmerman’s) account of the…

On Saturday July 13th, 2013th, all of America waited on what would be the verdict of George Zimmerman, who killed 17-year old boy Trayvon Martin in Sanford, Florida. In the end a six, mainly white, women jury decided to claim Zimmerman as non-guilty for second degree murder. This caused a huge shock for many Americans. They were left with this shock and pain through thoughts of how could this happen. There were protests because people felt that this verdict does not reflect the true justice that this country claims we fulfill. Due to this verdict and the overall trial, it displays how the United States justice system is not blind to race, because of the way the trial was set up and the ultimate outcome.…

Fox news is a highly criticized conservative news station and known for their ideals. CNN is more left sided and liberal which is the complete opposite when comparing the ideals for the two websites/new stations. When looking at the editorial approach they have to see what is going on currently, they chose the stories based on the importance, and ideals they will be able to reflect. Currently the elections are upcoming in November so Fox news who is conservative has a job of making the Republican Party look good, while CNN focuses on the Democratic Party and making them appeal to the society. The first thing that catches your eyes is the headlines. The headlines is what catches the reader’s attention, and the job for each editorial is to convince the readers of something. Some of the headlines for Fox are as follows: “The fallout over Hillary Clinton’s health concerns”, “Clinton email…
