In his speech This is Water David Foster Wallace during a commencement ceremony begins discussing the purpose of education, not only to become intellectually educated but to learn how to think. He introduces a metaphor of two fishes that after being asked how the water was, they wondered what water is, being water all the actual and commonly dismissed reality that surrounds us. Thus, it has led us to create a natural default setting that has caused individuals to become centralized in their individual/personal needs only, and that our needs are sometimes put over more relevant matters to fulfill our necessities first. He states that knowing how to think is to be capable to decide what things we pay attention to and what we learn from experience.…

Wallace, David Foster. "This is Water." Kenyon college commencement speech. May 21, 2005. Wallace's speech gives a look at reality. The way an American adult's life is. The way how everything is routine, how if not "well adjusted," you will be self centered and in default setting. He describes the daily routine of an American adult, and how he goes to a supermarket, packed with more people. He gets frustrated and annoyed by all of these people; how they are just wasting his time. He then starts thinking how all of these people are going through the same thing he is going through; they have rough days just as he does. If someone was to think outside the box and actually focus on the beauty of this world, they will not be bored, annoyed, frustrated,…

"This is Water" by David Wallace Foster is a speech about self-awareness in life. Wallace starts off the speech with a joke to quickly get his point across. Foster mentions two smaller fish being asked, "How the Water feels" by an older fish to where the smaller fish reply with, "what the hell is water." Foster then goes on by talking about how adults who live by routine tend to live sub-consciously which means that they're practically living without thinking about it. Foster then goes on to talk about self-awareness while waiting in line for the supermarket. Mentioning the two young fish's reaction to the most obvious thing around them, the water they swim in. They don't understand it because they chose to ignore it just like how Foster says…

In David Foster Wallace’s “This is Water” he speaks about how most people are crafted with very similar thoughts in mind. According to Foster all people hold one same quality from birth. By looking at Wallace’s usage of “Default Setting”, we can see that their is ambiguous meaning but chiefly it is referred to as a quality that people are cursed with, which most readers don't see; this is important because Wallace speaks on the notion that people are selfish and don't consider how others feel, and those qualities are considered to be the “Default Setting.”…

I agree one hundred percent with you when you say that the sentences from “Once More to the Lake” were very long and confusing. It was for this very reason I chose to write about “Androgynous Man”. While “Once more to the Lake” was very well written compared to “Androgynous Man”, it was just too hard for me to understand at times. I like when things are short sweet and to the point. I feel like in “Once more to the lake that E.B White was trying too much to sound sophisticated. Don’t get me wrong his story really painted a vivid picture to the audience reading it, which is excellent. A killer for me though is some of the wording used. I do not enjoy having to stop in the midst of reading to look up words, because I cannot understand…

The story Floating by Karen Brennan is about a woman who can miraculously float. She floats around the house day after day seeming to never leave. Her husband, however, seems completely unimpressed by her ability and sees her as a burden. A burden that he must feed and take care of. It is not long into the story before she finds a baby and brings it into her house. While this is happening another story is being told about a woman who meets Satan, and has a conversation with him in her house. The author intended for all of these events to relate to each other, and also to have some sort of deeper symbolism. The woman who aimlessly floats through the halls of her house does not have a choice, she is trapped. Her and every one else in the story is dead and stuck in Purgatory waiting for their eternal fate to be decided. All of them experiencing death in a different way, the man bitter and mean, the woman and baby oblivious,…

I chose the theme underwater because I have found that it provides an optimal learning environment. Children are familiar with under water life from a very early age, and I could use that knowledge to incorporate it into my lesson. There’s a vast majority of sea creatures that the kids could fall in love with creating a love for the classroom. Having a bright and colorful classroom will help keep the students alert in class as well as slightly energized. The room will not be too busy that it distracts them from learning but just the right amount. Studies have shown that the unisex environment will benefit the children because they won’t see one sex superior to the other. The children will have an equal opportunity and that will be shown by…
