Treagan’s Meddle

In Jack Harrell’s short story “Treagan’s Meddle,” he tells of an unusual encounter where a high school senior named Treagan, who is from a very LDS community, who goes to a rock concert with Jesus after praying for somebody to go with him to the concert. People who are LDS are used to hearing about spiritual experiences amongst its members, it is an integral part of the LDS faith, yet when Treagan shares his experience with people in his community they do not believe him and persecute him for his experience. As you enter through the door on the first level of this San Francisco-based Baptist-rooted church, you become overwhelmed by the warm hug and kiss of Sister “What’s-her-name?” as she bold and kindly greets you, “Good morning! God bless you!” Walking up the stairs heading into the Worship Center, Brother and Sister “So and so” affectionately embrace you, just as an aunt or uncle would at a family function. In an instant, you are drawn in by the harmonious singing of the choir over the upbeat sounds of musicians playing the drums, keyboard, guitars, organ and tambourines. As you look around, you may not recognize everybody, but you sense a powerful family-like bondage. Although the love of Christ…

The setting that I chose to observe is a Sunday morning Methodist Church service that included a baptism. It is Sunday morning at 6am and the church is pretty crowded. The candidates that are awaiting baptism are lined up on the front pew of the church; and they are all dressed in white. The reverend is speaking at the front of the church and he is dressed in white as well. The candidates are of a mixed crowd consisting of men, woman, teens, boys and girls.…

Immediately highlighting the problem of sin separating us from God within the general Christian worldview. After this, a church member took place at the podium and read a passage from the bible. The chapter and verses were never clarified, and the story was hard to follow, but I believe it was the story of a mother trying to convince her son to give his life to the king. During the reading, the congregation had books from which they read out responses. When the reading was over, the gentleman sat down, and the reverend made his way across the room to the podium. He spoke of the story from the reading as one of the darkest times in ancient Jewish history, and likened it to what is happening with ISIS today. As he finished his sermon, we stood, and the reverend walked back to the altar area and sat down, and we were…

As soon as I walked into the church, I could feel how tense the room already was. My two children grabbed my hands, fearfully, as we walked into the room filled with emotion. We searched for a place to sit. Pastor Edwards had already started his sermon, so we sat in the back pews. He immediately began pointing out our iniquities and used very vivid metaphors that clearly shown God’s wrath towards the congregation. When Pastor Edwards yelled, “You have offended Him infinitely more than ever a stubborn rebel did his prince; and yet it is nothing but His hand that holds you from falling into the fire every moment,” it was as if he aimed this directly at me (48).…
