Complainant reasserts her allegations. Complainant acknowledges that Martinez did not actually say a racial slur; however Complainant states that Martinez’s behavior (shaking his finger and interrupting her) are kinds of behaviors that people use against African-American to discredit and to belittle them. Complainant cites that Martinez’s behavior are “racial microaggressions” which are brief and everyday slights, insults, indignities and denigrating messages sent to people of color.…
In Europe the poor immigrants, "were useless plants mowed down by want, hunger, and war. But now with the power of transplantation they have taken root and flourished!" (290). Europe is just an infertile garden of hate and war but now that a more bountiful garden (America) has been discovered the immigrants can be "transplanted" and flourish and grow to their fullest potential fed by the new hopes, dreams, and opportunities that are appearing to them. Jean de Crèvecoer reinforces his point by posing the question: "What attachment can a poor European emigrant have for a country where he had nothing?" (290). An immigrant can't hope to have any loyalty to a country that has shown him disrespect from the moment he was born, a country that has spat in his face while he begged on the side of the road for a scrap of food, a country that has pushed him in to the mud and trodden on him. He instead must embrace a country that has new opportunities for him, a country where he is respected, and a country where he can get what he has always wanted to have,…
During the late 19th century and early 20th century, immigration to the United States was wrought with challenges. The newly arriving aliens were met with racist native-borns who feared that they would threaten their way of life. This tension between these new groups facilitated the U.S. government’s anti-immigration laws, which also caused political outbursts from those who supported immigrants.…
No matter what country you are in being an immigrant isn’t an easy thing. Especially now in the United States where immigration is seen as a problem with our new president. Our president has made decisions against immigration solely because of stereotypes that have been around for centuries. A great film that replicates the first sign of U.S. immigration and it’s first stereotypes in the late 1800s is Gangs of New York (2002). This movie takes place in New York where at this time there was a huge flow of a variety of Immigrants that had no one to relate to other than their own gang (people).…
John F. Kennedy once exclaimed, “Every American who ever lived, with the exception of one group, was either an immigrant himself or a descendant of immigrants(A Nation Of Immigrants page 3)." John was known for his irish-catholic heritage, and he served as one of our most beloved presidents. John A. Treutlen was the first naturalized citizen governor. Treutlen’s parents were raised with British ideals. When Treutlen went off to America to make something of himself, his parents called him worthless (D). However, he rose above his heritage to bring great ideas to American policies. Treutlen wasn’t the only citizen considered worthless. In fact many immigrants feel like this when they come to America. They want to prove to their families (and themselves) that…
Being born on American soil is a privilege that allows for a blind eye to be turned towards controversial and uncomfortable issues that don't directly affect our lives. This, however, does not change the reality of migrant experiences and the control of international migration.…
Time and again inhabitants of the United States resented new immigrants and foreigners, Ironically, the original settlers were immigrants themselves, and the definition of “foreigner” changed frequently as immigrants settle in, became “American”, and brand new wave of foreign immigrants swept in to take jobs from “Americans”. This resentment of long-distance immigrants is seen not only in the United States, but all over the world, in as diverse places as Great Britain and China, and this xenophobic view of change is not at all new. When the Irish and Germans immigrated to the United States, they were disliked by the Anglo-Saxon Protestants; when immigrants from Eastern Europe arrived, they were resented by the now American Irish and Germans; when Chinese railroad workers and gold miners arrived, they were certainly not welcomed by the totally “American” population. Though these long-distance immigrants hailed from different places over time, the pattern of distrust and hostility persisted in the United States and elsewhere.…
Immigrants are the least appreciated in this country, which is the most ironic thing considering that this country is only really made up of immigrants. Having blond hair and blue eyes doesn’t mean anything, because European settlers came from Europe, not America. The only real people that belong in america are the native indigenous people of the americas. Yet, that’s what immigrants have to be to be accepted into a world where these traits are so valued, a common norm, as if the world revolved around them,to simply try to be “white” in a place that isn’t even white to begin with. The fear that runs in the blood of immigrants comes from the fear that they not only will be ridiculed but will be killed for being who they are. The tone an immigrant mother makes to warn her children that different is unacceptable, that your culture should be kept but not “overdone.” Your language is to be spoken but only in certain situations, and in front of other people, it will be seen as rude. It’s baffling to only hear that the people who only come here to be better people and find better opportunities are only dismissed as scum and no better than the rich privileged people we call the face of our country. Times have changed, The United States isn’t as racist, but that doesn’t make it any better if you’ve been keeping up with politics or…
standings all play an substantial role when discussing social alienation. However, more often than so,…
The grass is not always greener on the other side, which is the case for many immigrants migrating to America. Coming to America by Gibbs and Bankhead, A Hyphenated Identity by Harry Kitano, and as well as the essay Wandering Between Two Worlds, One Dead, the Other Powerless to be Born by Ramon S. Torrecilha are all detailed works of writing about the hardships immigrants had to overcome becoming a citizen or already being a citizen of the United States. I believe that many people have an overwhelming expectation about America and take the notion of it being a free state to literally. Countless of immigrants minds assume that once they move to America they will have the opportunity, the success, the romance, and when it is all said and done several immigrants just think of America as an utter disappointment.…
The majority of all foreigners travels to the U.S. to seek better opportunities, however, immigrants are often made susceptible because of who they are. Costa informs us how often immigrants, and migrants with visas are mistreated and threaten, women are often used as sex slaves. Costa uses pathos to cause emotions by informing the reader how immigrants are tossed around. Costa expresses that foreign guest workers that come out of the country are often the most abused, they are abused by because they are low-skilled workers that come to the U.S. with visas. “…workers on H-2A and H-2B visas have been beaten and assaulted, raped, starved, kept as captives and subjected to forced labor…”( Costa 2) this happens because employers who have guest workers try to push off having U.S. citizen workers because guest workers are paid much less than skilled workers. Some of them get paid one dollar an hour up to two dollars and hour. Along with such cheap labor they are mistreated and are forced into sex slavery because the employer is doing them a…
Immigration is the process of foreigners settling into another country permanently for the purpose of employment, education, or any other purpose. Immigration has been an issue to United States for decades. The question whether Immigration in US is harmful to the country or not has been debated since ages and will be a subject of debate in future too. We have seen that being immigrant in US has helped many of the immigrants whereas on the other side it has been a leading cause of problems like depression, suicide etc. Being immigrant in US for someone means a lot of difficulties in terms of adapting to the foreign soil. An individual has to start a new life from ground zero regardless of his/her position in the previous countries. There is an only 5% chance that any individual can continue the career from where he/she dropped from the country of origin which brings a lot of depression among the immigrants. For most people, being amongst friends and relatives means a lot and gives happiness and relief to their lives. In this case nothing can be a substitute of the affection of relationships. Being immigrants, they have to stay thousands of miles apart and have to suffer this separation each and every day which leads to loneliness. This can also be a cause of depression for more than 70% immigrants according to a survey report. Big difference in the skills and education also sets the immigrants back from finding the right job at the start. Even though an immigrant has knowledge and skills from their previous homeland but due to the requirement of the US companies that the education and experience be from the US based companies, immigrants are finding harder to match the job with their skills. A lot of foreigners who move to US had first-class jobs in high positions before they were immigrants. When they reach US, it is now a different ball game. Some have hard times to find their match and thus, have to…
David Cole's "Five Myths about Immigration," while not a persuasive argument, is obviously a personal issue for the author who believes Americans treat immigrants poorly. He introduces the reader to "Know Nothings," or "Native Americans," who blame every problem in America on the immigrants (Cole 189-90). In the introductory paragraph, Cole attempts to obtain the reader's sympathetic feelings as he writes with great passion when he describes the mistreatment his Irish Catholic immigrant ancestors endured (190). This in turn raises the question of how objective he could remain when presenting his arguments. Coles' attempts to disprove the five myths about immigrants are not effective as his tone is often too personal, clouding his judgment, and his statistics and some data are either lacking credibility or logic.…
Most of these things only happen to them and not other people, and this is really cruel. The first example that happens to them is that when a police officer finds out that a person is an illegal immigrant, some police officers can be very violent to them. The police officer can hit them and beat them up just because they are an illegal immigrant. Right after this happens, the police officer deports them back to their country. Immigrants come here to have a better life, but they are always harassed. Another thing that happens to them when they come to the U.S is that a lot of immigrants are uninsured because of who they are. When immigrants have a medical problem, they come to the hospital, but the hospital won’t help them. When immigrants try to get insurance, they get turned away. The final thing that happens to them is that they are discriminated. They are discriminated by others who don’t accept them because they think they are different just because of where they come from and what they look like. (Carrilo, Elsa.”Immigration Treated Unfairly”.) A lot of stuff happens to immigrants when they come to the…
I just want to say I do share the same opinion where we can see that many different people abuse the system, where they manage to make a fraud just to get a Visa, in order to enter to the United States. These frauds that people like to do is to lie in the applications that they submit in order to get the permit and the welcome to our country. These different ways of abuses can from lying on the application on what’s the reason to come here they make a statement that they just want it for tourist purposes. But we can find the fact that they want to stay here as illegally. Other perfect example is through marriage, this could be a very common fraud, where they fallow a wrong procedure of lying to our representatives in order to get here. I could say these could be some of the reason that we need to have a better system or a better structure in order to stop bad people that just want to come here and do bad.…
