The music of Trey Songz has become one of popular consumption. Due to the fact that he didn’t start his musical career until the mid-2000s, he is a prime candidate for observation. More to the fact, it is my belief that his music represents that of this era of R&B, and thus would be a good artist to evaluate. Much of his music involves that of the desire for sex, break-ups, cheating, life in the hood, and the desire for success. The first parallel his music has with the newer hip-hop and pop music is the beat. His music has a faster tempo and contains a more electric beat than that of the past. Unlike the soulfulness of the 20th century, songs like “Neighbors Know My Name”, “Panty Wetter”, and “Unusual” display the how his music is much more sexual
Often his music, like that of many artists, takes on a masochistic aspect to it, where as the last era put value on women and displayed them as queens instead of sexual items. This can be seen in his songs, “Without A Women”, in which while he states that what would life be without a woman, it also provides the idea that you need a women to succeed, thus objectifying women. This can also be seen in, “I Need A Women” and “Last Time”, in which, he feels guilt for cheating on his girlfriend, so to resolve his guilt he says they can only have sex one last time. Moreover, while his songs to touch on themes from the last era, such as love and love’s hardships, it doesn’t approach the topic in the same way. His song, “Bad Decisions”, he describes the situation where his girl broke-up with him because he took too long coming home the night before because he was cheating on her. In the past era, the break-up songs would provide the listener with a personal reflection of the situation, but the situation of breaking-up because you cheating on a girl was never a situational topic that came up, because it wasn’t a situation that
