With health care becoming a major demand for military service members and their families Congress passed the Dependents Medical Care Act of 1956 then with the Military Medical Benefits Amendments of 1966. These allowed the Department of Defense to go out and get contracts with different civilian health care providers to provide care to military service members and their family members as well. DHA changed the health care program and moved to TRICARE Management Activity (TMA) which is the program the military uses today.
