Elementary School Teaching
An Elementary School Teacher would be a great job for someone who likes to work with children and loves a school environment. The elementary teacher is involved with many student activities, not just the classroom. Education is an important role in a student’s life and that is a big responsibility to take on. Someone with good communication skills and creative ideas would be good as a teacher. Teachers need to have strong leadership skills and an abundance of patience. Elementary School Teachers need strong communication and teamwork skills. They must work well with students, staff and parents. Teachers need to have organizational and management skills to be able to handle the tasks that they must complete each day. Being an Elementary School Teacher will help shape education, social and moral development of children.
Elementary school is where the academic careers of most students begin (Ecahore-McDavid 1). Teachers need to instruct social skills along with general school subjects. Elementary School Teachers are knowledgeable in the various subjects that they teach. Subjects will include language, science, mathematics, and social studies. Teachers could be creative by maintaining a system of rewards and punishments. You can encourage students to behave and participate. As a teacher, you will have to prepare daily lesson plans and assignments. It will also include grading papers and tests. Students have different abilities, skill levels, learning Pickard 2 styles, and maturity levels; therefore, it is important to use a variety of teaching methods and different type of strategies. Teachers could also use films, tapes, computers and any other aid to help with their instruction. Imagination is a big part of a teacher’s job so that you are able to connect with the student and help in a manner that would make the student understand the lesson being taught.
As part of planning, an elementary school teacher develops teaching outlines and lesson plans, keep class attendance, give lectures, evaluate student progress, facilitate decisions and activities, and assign homework. The typical age range of students who attend elementary school is from 6 to 12 years old (Ecahore-McDavid, 1). The typical classroom size can be anywhere from 20 to 30 students (Ecahore-McDavid, 1). Depending on the school, basic elementary school teachers teach students first through eighth grade. The basic skills that a first and second grade teaches is, reading, writing, telling time, and counting (“Teacher,” Fofweb, 2). Teachers that teach older students will instruct history, math, geography, English and handwriting. Teachers can be creative by teaching new concepts such as, arts and crafts, using workbooks, music, and other interactive activities. Teachers will also provide quizzes and tests to check the students’ comprehension. Each student will be graded as well as a comment given on the development of the students learning skills as well as social skills.
Elementary school teaching seems interesting because the school environment is a pleasant place to be. It is a safe and secure location and working with children seems that it would be rewarding. Patience and perseverance is a must in this job. There are several different career paths that you could advance in as well. Experienced teachers can become mentor Pickard 3 teachers who provide guidance to beginning teachers. With higher education, certifications and certain credentials, you can become a counselor, reading specialist, librarian, program director, school principal or even a superintendent. Elementary School Teachers can pursue careers in many other areas of education. They can become community college instructors, university professors, corporate trainers, educational software developers and textbook editors. Advancement possibilities are endless. These positions are limited though, and the competition is fierce.
Elementary Teachers must possess a bachelor’s degree in either education or in the subject they plan to teach. Teachers must also complete an approved training program. There are several education programs within the United States that combine both subject and educations classes with work experience in the classroom. Teachers make an annual salary range of $30,000 to $80,000 for ten months (Elementary, 1). The majority of teachers are contracted to work 10 months out of the year, with a two-month vacation during the summer (“Teacher,” Fofweb, 3). During the summer break, many continue their education to renew or upgrade their teaching licenses and earn higher salaries. Often teachers supplement their earnings through teaching summer classes, coaching sports, sponsoring a club or other activities. There are approximately 1.5 million elementary school teachers that are employed in the United States (“Teacher,” Fofweb, 5). Education is such an important role in a student’s life. There is some special calling as a teacher. This calling is based on a love of children and a dedication to the students’ well-being. Teachers must respect children as individuals. Students have personalities, strengths, and weaknesses of their own. Teachers serve as a student’s role model, so they need to serve that well. Pickard 4
