Trick Or Treat: Painting Analysis
Paper #1
Description assignment

Intro:
When I first glanced at this painting I didn’t think much of it. My first interpretation was nothing more than a little boy wearing a Batman costume while trick or treating on Halloween. However, as I looked closer, the meaning jumped out at me. Not only was the little boy dressed up as Batman, he believed he was Batman. When we are kids we believe we can do anything, such as becoming Batman when we grow up.
Thesis:
In understanding this painting, I believe this painting represents a child’s never-ending determination to believe that he or she can become anything they want or set their mind’s to.
Body #1(description):
The acrylic painting “Trick or Treat” created by Luke Hamilton is almost abstract in some areas. The abstractness that the painting generates resembles that of a cartoon. When a

Nothing in the painting stands out vibrantly. This helps to draw a person’s eye solely to the boy and not his surroundings when first glancing at the painting. However, everything in the painting adds to the boy’s overall look.
While the Batman mask is covering his small face, leaving only is mouth and eyes to be seen, a person could still identify his expression coming through the mask. His expression in both his eyes and smile mimics that of an overjoyed child about to receive candy. The corners of the little boy’s mouth slant slightly upwards. His hands are place on each side of his hips. As he looks up, he portrays the image that someone is about to hand him some candy.
Furthermore, his costume resembles that of a classic Batman outfit. His costume is equipped with the Batman belt, mask, boots and cape. A large Batman logo is located in the middle of his costume just beneath his neck. Also, the little boy’s pug stands next to him on his right. His pug is dressed in a costume. The pug’s costume resembles that of Batman’s longstanding sidekick,

    You might be a fan of Christian Bale, Michael Keaton, or even Ben Affleck, but if you ask anyone, “Who was the original Batman?” they would most likely say, “Adam West.” The classic ABC series, Batman that ran from 1966 to 1968, was the first major exposure that many people had to the pteropine vigilante and his brightly garbed cohort, Robin. It had cheesy dialogue, used the cheapest of special effects, and is extremely dated. However, all of those things are part of what fans love about the show to this day. People still enjoy the 1960’s Batman for its goofy, campy, and “so bad it’s good” qualities. For these reasons, Warner Bros. Animation and DC Entertainment came together to create a new crime-fighting adventure for the Dynamic Duo for the modern age. On October 6, Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders will premiere at New York Comic Con. The straight-to-video animated feature harkens back to the madcap antics that made the classic show so beloved. Also, the two stars from the original show - Adam West and Burt Ward – lend their voices to their iconic roles as Batman and Robin, respectively,…

    I think the painting is a form of expression in which the intention is to give the viewer an increased awareness of how we have become a materialistic society. Because of our increased desire for the better things in life it is easier to allow ourselves to become distracted and lose sight of what is truly important in life. As a society we want to strive to be better in everything we do. In the past our american culture has taught us right from wrong, to love God and country and to stand true to our families. The importance of those morals and values seem to have disappeared.The black bird or raven can be a positive symbol of mankind's desire to be moral and spiritually…

    Many of the superhero use mask as an embellishment. “In this, the mask represents the general possibility of re-creating a person by a change of dress” (Weltzien 2005, p.230). We can say that mask is representing the identity of the heroes because it’s a part of his costume and it is built up the image of the heroes. Then He also mentions “superhero is a construction of a certain role model of manliness” (Weltzien 2005, p.231).…

    In my opinion, the artist, Robert Henri, did successfully make his point. I believe the artist did an excellent job in portraying the boy as an adult, and successfully portray the fear made by the boy about growing up. I really couldn’t paint a better picture to show how a little boy can look like an adult and be scared to grow up. The blazer, and shirt did an amazing job portraying the artists motive, and so did the dark, gloomy…

    We were all once kids with those crazy ideas of becoming a superhero, or a princess in a huge castle. Our parents let us believe it, but they knew it would eventually not happen. The minds of children run free with imagination, and there is no stopping it. For example, before every shower I took, I would run around naked with a cape and scream “NAKED BOY!!!” Don’t ask me why, but the point is that my mind was all over the place. It paid off in the future because now I am really creative, and my mind is always open. Even though I didn’t achieve my dream of becoming the first naked superhero, I have the vision and strong belief to get me to where I want to be today.…

    A very interesting feature I’ve learned about Batman was that the black and grey bodysuit was not the first idea for Batman’s mien, I then proceeded to read a quote from Bill Finger which he recalled from when Bob had an idea of a character called ‘the Bat-Man’ and he wanted him to look at the drawings of him. So Finger later came over and the sketches depicted a man with blonde hair fashioning a red suit complete with mechanical wings, black trunks, black domino mask. Then Bill Finger then altered his design to give him a black cowl and given Batman a dark grey suit to appear more dismal, changed his wings to a black cape, creased to look like bat wings when he’s fighting or swinging on a rope, and to complete the design, Batman was given a pair of gloves to not leave behind fingerprints. After reading about this backstory, I was compelled to look up that design to confirm it was true, and to my surprise, that was an unfeigned fact. My opinion of this story was that I was amazed at what Batman would have been, and in retrospect, I later agreed with Finger’s idea with creating what metamorphosed into Batman’s modern…

    Costume designer Lindy Hemming described the Joker's look as reflecting his personality, in that "he doesn't care about himself at all"; she avoided designing him as a vagrant, but still made him appear to be "scruffier, grungier," so that "when you see him move, he's slightly twitchier or edgy."[20][31][31] Nolan noted, "We gave a Francis Bacon spin to [his face]. This corruption, this decay in the texture of the look itself. It's grubby. You can almost imagine what he smells like."[99] In creating the "anarchical" look of the Joker, Hemming drew inspiration from such countercultural pop culture artists as Pete Doherty, Iggy Pop, and Johnny Rotten.[100] Ledger described his "clown" mask, made up of three pieces of stamped silicone, as a "new technology," taking less than an hour for the make-up artists to apply, much faster than more-conventional prosthetics usually requires. Ledger also said that he felt he was barely wearing any make-up.[20][101]…
