Culture Inside People Culture is important in every human aspect of life. It influences the way we think, behave, live, and also our characteristic. Culture gives us a sense of belonging because we can connect and relate to our culture in everyday life. It explains why we do a certain thing that other people do not .We cannot escape from our own culture because it shapes us to who we are today. In “Where the Land is Stepped on, the Sky above It Must Be Upheld”, Trikartikaningsih Byas illustrates how culture effects a person’s life.
Byas’ name was very important to her because it connected to her gender, background, character and all the personality that she has. Byas original name was Trikartikaningsih, it shows that she is “the third child and a female” (Byas 33) Her name related to the shared value and custom of her Indonesian culture. When I first came to the United States, I was very excited. But what happened next left me in frustration for about two month. I was in eighth grade when it happened. My name was entered wrong in the system attendance and roll call of the school. Instead of Dat, I was called “Dot” by the teachers. It frustrate me greatly in the inside. I was afraid to speak up, and I knew to English at that time. It felt weird with people changing my name and call me that way. The name gave to me by my parent mean “Success” in my culture, and it only mean a “Dot” at that time. I have to bear with a new name for about two month. The school fixed my name immediately after that. I’ve got my name back to normal, I was happy. My name is important to me because it is my pride in which my parent and my culture gave to
