Discuss one alliance in existence in 1914, mentioning at least two important points such as; Geography, Arms Race, Nationalism, Expansionism, Historical Significance, Blood Ties/Natural Ties.
The outbreak of The Great War in 1914 was due to escalated tension between several countries, which resulted in forming a number of alliances. European countries created alliances because of fear. Countries became more scared of each other, and therefore decided to outline agreements in case of war. The Triple Entente was a significant alliance that was made between Russia, France and Britain to contradict the increasing threat from Germany, as well as prevent German Expansion in Europe.

France spent a vast amount of money to help increase their armed forces, had a population of 40 million, and armed forces of 900,000, before WWI. Russia, before WWI, had an enormous army consisting of 1,300,000, but had poor equipment and was poorly trained. They had also just been defeated by the Japanese and struggled economically. Germany, before WWI, contained an army of 700, 00, was well trained and had modern equipment. The positioning of the countries in The Triple Entente (Russia, Britain and France) gave them a minor advantage with their offense.
