For this essay I chose to compare and contrast Les Ballet Trockadero Monte Carlo’s version of The Dance of the Little Swans from The Swan Lake against Yanis Marshall’s Beyoncé Medley Rehearsal for the finale of Britain’s Got Talent.
At first glace you can see the connections in the productions, as both are dances that are typically performed by women, portrayed by men. Both presentations are done with the same props and costumes as a women dance company would use; full ballet costumes for Trockadero and high heels in Yanis’ case. But in my opinion that is where the similarities end.
Trockadero dance a well known choreography for one of the most popular classical ballets, while Yanis Marshall
dances a street-jazz style with hip-hop influences choreography he created to a contemporary pop artist’s music. The ballet is performed in a stage with full costume while the jazz piece is the video of a final rehearsal for a TV presentation, thus being in a more laid back atmosphere.
The Swan Lake version of Trockadero is a parody. Having moments of out off synch dance and one of the dancers noticeably distracted while dancing. This rendition is supposed to be a funny take on a very serious piece of ballet. On the other hand, Yanis Marshall’s performance is completely serious, the steps are sharp and the dancers are synchronized with each other. The intention of this piece is to wow the audience with a strong and aggressive choreography.
Even though both of these dance performances could seemingly put them in the same category I think that their intentions place them miles away from each other.
