Tropical Savanna Biome

Tropical savannas or grasslands are associated with the tropical wet and dry climate type. A tropical wet and dry climate predominates in areas covered by savanna growth. Average monthly temperatures are at or above 64° F. Although these areas are overall very dry, they do have a season of heavy rain. Annual rainfall is from 20-50 inches per year. It is crucial that the rainfall is concentrated in six or eight months of the year, followed by a long period of drought when fires can occur. If the rain were well distributed throughout the year, many such areas would become tropical forest. Tropical grasslands are located near the equator, between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn. They cover much of Africa as well as large areas of Australia, South America, and India. The major animals in the exhibit are the Lions, Leopards, and Hyenas. I chose these animals to be the major animals in the exhibit, not only because they’re popular animals, but because they happen to be the top predators in the biome. They might interact with each other by competing for necessities or using team work to catch prey. The minor animals in the exhibit I chose are the Giraffes, Kangaroos, and Impalas. I chose these animals to be the minor animals in the exhibit, because they’re popular minor animals in the Tropical Savanna biome. They might interact with each other when eating or using team work to alert when predators are nearby. The plants in the exhibit I chose are the Bermuda grass, Jackalberry tree, and Kangaroo paws. I chose these plants because they seemed to be the more common of plants in the biome. Animals with interact with them by eating them. Man has affected the Tropical Savanna biome through degradation, introducing foreign animals to the biome, populating the biome with humans, and farming. This biome is important for survival on the planet because it contains an abundant amount of species (plants and animals) any increase or decrease of a species of animals or plants, causes a ripple effect of change in through other parts of the environment. Because there is many species in the savanna and some of them are endangered it is important to keep it safe for the animals and plants.
