Baseball has long been a cherished recreational activity and an integral part of American life and culture. Over time, many baseball terms have become main stream idiomatic expressions in U.S. English, such as something is “in the ballpark” when an action or results fall within commonly accepted and expected boundaries or someone is asked to “step up to the plate” to take status-changing action. In many respects, baseball can be seen as a metaphoric reflection of American cultural and social values. Take for example the many variations of the beloved story of the unassuming underdog baseball player who rises to fame or the disjointed team that manages to rally and win a highly coveted championship trophy, or the notion that there is hope until the very end because “anything can happen in baseball” . Numerous American classics such as The Bad News Bears (1976), The Sandlot (1993), and Perfect Game (2000) build their coming of age stories around baseball as the quintessential American boyhood experience. Why is it then that the love for little league baseball seems to be waning in the small town of Vienna, Virginia?…
It’s a place where people can escape their houses and escape outside to find their selves in a stadium filled with people enjoying a baseball game. What really makes baseball and of course baseball history so interesting and fun is the environment, it’s an environment like no other. Baseball players are a different kind of famous, there completely different from actors and actresses. Baseball players are people who stand out, they aren’t chosen by the quality of their voice or the way they present themselves on TV and not even by how they look but how they are athletes and how they play on the…

Baseball Parallels: The use of baseball parallels such as baseball pitcher, mound, teams took the field, spectators, and crowd were all used as a way to hide the evilness going on in the stadium now. At one time the stadium was used for sports, mainly soccer, but now that the Taliban has taken over it is used for the killings of…

The Miami Marine Stadium (MMS) is a historical landmark home to Virginia Key, Miami, Florida. Built in 1963 and designed by Cuban-born architect, Hilario Candela, who was only 28 years old at the time. The Stadium is considered a Modernist icon due to its characteristic reinforced concrete structure. Named after the famous 1900’s yacht designer Ralph Munroe, the stadium can accommodate 6,566 spectators. Due to its photographic panoramic view and its location next to the water and across Downtown Miami, the stadium was host for many different world class powerboat events, hydroplane regattas, and major aquatic-stage concerts for artists such as Jimmy Buffet. Tragically, after Hurricane Andrew, in September 1992, the Miami Marine Stadium had to be shut down since it was deemed unsafe for the public. After being abandoned, the MMS became a graffiti…

“Baseball. It's just a game-as simple as a ball and a bat. Yet as complex as the American spirit it symbolizes. It's a sport, business-and sometimes even religion.” Ernie Harwell’s quote from his 1955 poem, “The Game for All America” displays how baseball is a part of America’s roots. The game of baseball is as complex and changing as America itself. In the 1920s many things were evolving and Babe Ruth progressed baseball and society with his popularity, greatness, and love for the game that firmly established the game of baseball for generations to come.…

For well over a century, baseball has been hailed as America’s National Past Time. Baseball is uniquely American. In the 1989 baseball film, Field of Dreams, one of the main characters remarks on the importance of baseball for America. “Baseball,” he says, is “the one constant through all the years.” Baseball connects Americans to their past. “This field, this game,” he continues, “reminds us of all that once was good and that could be again.” This week, the tradition of Opening Day ushered in the 2015 baseball season—the 146th season of professional baseball in America.…

Baseball as a sport is considered to be America's pastime. Nothing beats sitting at your favorite ballpark, with a hot dog smothered with ketchup and mustard in one hand and an ice cold beer in the other hand. This scene is symbolic to the American culture. Baseball has seen its fair share of changes, from the dead ball era, to the expansion era, where we see different races from around the world coming to america to play this great game we know as baseball. Baseball has always been popular in the united states and always will be. The game has been around for 172 years and is just as popular now than it was when it was first introduced in 1839. People argue today that American football, not soccer, is now becoming more of the “American” sport than baseball. Baseball represents more of what america is, does not have a sole purpose of a means for a social gathering of people, and has more integrity than the game of football.…
