Trump Administration Danger
The Trump Administration Represents a Clear and Present Danger to the Freedom of Speech in the United States
I. Introduction
The Trump administration has come under attack just about all of its actions since he took office about a month ago, receiving criticism on everything from ‘Muslim’ ban 2to his cabinet appointments to his war with the ‘mainstream media’. While the latter is well documented, the larger idea that the Trump administration is threat to Freedom of Speech is less considered. However, holistically looking at the Trump Administration’s constant and undeterred pronouncement of objectively false statements and its ongoing effort to undermine the media, it is clear that the Trump administration represents a clear and present danger

The main perpetrator of this is the President himself, often lashing on Twitter or to the media with provocative, verifiably false statements. For example, he repeatedly told the media and his followers that he garnered the most electoral college votes since Ronald Reagan; in fact, he only outperformed George W. Bush out of the four previous presidents (CNN). This example was not just a mishap; similar behavior has been a staple of Trump’s campaign and now presidency. This sort of purposeful use of misinformation and propaganda for self-aggrandizement by a person in power is alarmingly reminiscent of historical authoritarian figures, who often limit freedom of speech to avoid criticism and silence opposing views. More poignant, however, are the occasions in which the Trump administration uses lies to set the stage for political action or to rally people against a false enemy. For example, he claimed on Twitter that at least three million votes were illegal, and continues to do so even though the claim has absolutely no bearing in reality - there are is no credible evidence that this is true and is rated as extremely unlikely by fact checkers (Politifact). The Trump Administration, directly or indirectly, may use this lie as part of its justification for stringent voter ID …show more content…
Trump has fought with the “main stream media” since the beginnings of his campaign, boycotting Fox-News’ Republican Primary debate (Fox News). The tensions have only intensified since his presidency, often berating the media, including reputable news networks like the New York Times, for waging a war against him with ‘Fake news’. However, he fails to provide evidence as to exactly what news networks are misreporting, simply referring to “negative coverage as ‘so evil and so bad’ and that ‘they write lies’;” statements absent of examples of the supposed lies (Breitbart). The repugnance is so strong that Steven Bannon, the administration’s chief strategist, labeled the media as the “opposition party” (Politico), and Trump himself doubled down by labeling it as the “Enemy of the American People.” (New York Times) This radical stance is incredibly alarming as it pits the Media, the ultimate manifestation of opposing views and by extension free speech, as an enemy of the state, possibly justifying or inciting the silence of entities that the Trump administration arbitrarily labels a

In the article by Michael Parenti, he explains that there is a widely accepted belief in this country that the media suffer from a liberal bias. He states that television pundits, radio talk-show hosts, and political leaders--including presidents of both parties--help propagate this belief, and their views are widely disseminated in the media. On the other hand, dissident critics--those who maintain that the corporate-owned press exercises a conservative grip on news and commentary--are afforded almost no exposure in this same supposedly liberal media. This is a valid source of information because author Michael Parenti is an author of Inventing Reality: The Politics of News Media. He also had a book, Political Mythology in America, which was…

Known for her tremendous work of hosting NPR’s On the Media, Brooke Gladstone analyzes in, “The Great Refusal”, the impact of reporters’ convictions in order to ascertain its direct effect on media bias. The job of a reporter is to recall relevant social and economic accounts that take place daily without siding on an issue. Majority of the time, journalists and reporters lack credibility to prove the accuracy or falsity of the information that they release to the public. While some seldom favors an issue relative to their opinion, others remain neutral and make the great refusal. Gladstone indirectly refers to the “Great Refusal” by providing brief historic scenarios that elucidate the controversy of media bias against society.…

The United States of America is one of the only country’s on earth that has the right for freedom of press enshrined in its constitution (U.S. Const. amend. I). If you take a second to stop and think about that, we are one of the only countries who have truly ‘guaranteed media freedom’, that is something very special as well as something that is paramount to maintaining a functioning democratic society. It seems as if we almost take for granted the myriad of different sources and outlets that we can pull from and learn from. In this writing I will present you with two different ideologies that weigh in on the media system in America today, one from a liberal’s point of view and one from a conservatives point of view.…

A perfect example of this is his ongoing war on media, which ranges from him accusing news organizations of being fake to explicitly threatening the press. He infamously attacked CNN writer Michael Cohen during his first presidential press conference and began a shouting war with a CNN reporter who was begging to ask him a question. Trump’s justification was calling CNN “fake news.". During the same event, he asserted that Buzzfeed is a “failing pile of garbage” that would “suffer the consequences” for publishing an unverified dossier about his potential ties to the Kremlin in Russia (“Full” 18-19). Politico reports that, even before his election, Trump threatened to sue the press for publishing stories he believes to be false (Gold 2). These instances highlight Trump’s desperate attempt at quieting the media that reports against him by threatening to take a medium away form opponents. Further, Trump intentionally creates distractions from disagreement among the populous. Amidst nationwide protests and women’s marches concurrent with and following his inauguration, the new president, in a speech that was meant for the Central Intelligence Agency repeated false claims that over a million people attended his inauguration, even though expert photographic analysis of the event not only refutes his numbers, but shows that even more people attended women’s marches on that day…

In this project, which satirized Donald Trump’s speech on muslims, our group’s goal was to bring light to Donald Trump’s atrocious behavior. His recent speech about muslims being the source of America’s problems is similar to many of Adolf Hitler’s speeches, where he blames members of the Jewish community for all of Germany’s problems, post World War I. Trump’s attitude towards muslims is very reminiscent of Hitler’s early attitude towards jews, and Trump’s tyranny must be stopped before it begins. As James Madison said, “The means of defence against foreign danger have been always the instruments of tyranny at home.” Trump’s means of defense against foreign danger are truly the instruments of tyranny. Therefore, Trump must be given no quarter…

That is the Information that CNN and The New York Times are sending out to us viewers, they are being perfidiousness to us. The news sources are giving us one sided stories that are planned to meet their opinions instead of just putting out the facts and leaving us to interpret it. Studies show that humans are more likely to choose something because they heard of it on the tv or because someone else choose it. This means that CNN and The New York Times have made trap that everyone is walking into. Also 38% of americans watch CNN each day, that’s a big number. Also 88% of people read a New York Times paper each month, meaning that millions of lives are being filled with bias facts making it so the TV is deciding that person's likability and not his actions. What’s worse is that CNN has admitted to making up stories, and being rude to the president. This is a quote from one of CNN’s main editors “Yeah that whole Russia hacking the elections was just a cover up so Hillary didn’t lose so bad”. How angry does that make you feel? Half of the american population believed that only to learn it’s false. What’s worse is that CNN still has bias and hasn’t fixed their problems. Also CNN has admitted to their own pravda. However you can get them to change by watching other news networks who are not bias. This will hit their income hard and force them to change their ways or their news network…
