Now aside from Roger not running out of Mrs. Luella’s house, let’s talk about how he was in the beginning of the story. In the beginning, when Roger
tried stealing the purse, he started off as some clumsy and inexperienced child. In the second paragraph on Page 1, it says that “The boy’s weight and the weight of the pure combined caused him to lose his balance so, instead of taking off full blast as he had hoped, they boy fell on his back on the sidewalk and his legs flew up.” Basically what it is saying is that Roger couldn’t lift up the purse and instead fell to his feet due to his clumsiness and the weight of the purse. This goes to show that Roger is also inexperienced with stealing. Because wouldn’t a professional stealer know how to steal something without failing? And so because of Roger falling down, this lead to Mrs. Luella dragging him to her house. And this is where the change begins.
Later on, Mrs. Luella brings Roger to her house. Roger is obviously terrified and has no idea what to do. Now Roger probably expected Mrs. Luella to pound Roger into the ground, but it’s actually the complete opposite. Instead Mrs. Luella tells Roger to “go to that sink and wash your face” in the last paragraph on the first page. Mrs. Luella gives Roger a clean towel and sends him to the sink instead of jail. Roger is now confused but at the same time nervous. Later on, he begins to realize what is happening.
