Amazing Grace, by Jonathan Kozol, is about the author’s interviews with, and thoughts about, some of the poorest people who live in the poorest sections of New York. The facts stated in Amazing Grace startled me with the prevalence and desperation of the poverty situation in areas like the South Bronx and Mott Haven. These are areas where there are hundreds of thousands of people living in broken, crowded, and rundown apartment buildings, “That,” says Kozol, “most people would not even kennel their dogs in.” (pg. 51) I have been to areas near my home that I thought were poverty stricken, but they pale in comparison to some of the situations that I read about in Amazing Grace. On the very first page I was surprised by the fact that, “In 1991, the median household income of the area, according to the New…

What is the Sixties Scoop? The term Sixties Scoop was coined by Patrick Johnston in his 1983 report Native Children and the Child Welfare System. It refers to the Canadian practice, beginning in the 1960s and continuing until the late 1980s, of apprehending unusually high numbers of children of Aboriginal peoples in Canada [against the Native parents’ will] and fostering or adopting them out, usually into [medium-class]white families. An estimated 20,000 aboriginal children were taken from their families,” (1). The Sixties Scoop refers to a particular phase of a larger history, and not to an explicit government policy. Although the practice of removing Aboriginal children from their families and into state care existed before the 1960s (with the residential school system, for example), the drastic overrepresentation of Aboriginal children in the child welfare system accelerated in the 1960s, when Aboriginal children were seized and taken from their homes and placed, in most cases, into middle-class Euro-Canadian families. This overrepresentation continues today (2). In his play, Only Drunks and Children Tell the Truth, Drew Hayden Taylor manifests how Janice’s life is greatly impacted by the scoop-up leading to the loss of culture, identity crisis, and lack of sense of belonging.…

Symbolism is one of the most common and powerful literary devices. It helps revel the characters and develop the themes of the work. Ian Macmillan has successfully made use of symbolism in the short story "Liar Liar". The heron and the camera are the most vital symbols of all, which help provide a deeper meaning of the story. While the heron represents for the wealthy families, the camera embodies new hope, new outlook, and these two symbols both convey the message about the role of family in the life.…

Niccolo Machiavelli, a man who knows the truth of political ethics, wrote his treatise into a book. The Prince, one of Machiavelli’s masterpieces, contains a number of maxims concerning politics, such as the qualities of the prince. By the saying that “the ends justify the means”, Machiavelli claimed that violence may be necessary for the successful stabilization of power and introduction of new legal institutions. Refer to political realism, Machiavelli was claiming a truth, and he made no disguise of his spurn to morality. Based on the evil of human nature, Machiavelli advised the price to achieve the goals without regard to morality. However, the truth is not always useful and good for everyone. Even though Machiavelli wrote the truth for a monarchical prince in The Prince, throughout history, The Prince is not a good advice for ruling class and common people today.…

Gay men often claim that even as children they knew they were somehow "different" from other boys. Many say that sense even preceded puberty. And yet, though researchers have tried for decades to identify a biological basis for homosexuality -- which seems to be present in all human societies -- they have mostly come up dry. Tantalizing clues have surfaced: gays are more likely to be left-handed, for instance. But in the end, there has been little proof that biology is sexual destiny.…

    The Truth About Truth

Throughout Conjectures and Refutations: The Growth of Scientific Knowledge (1963), Karl Popper suggests that no scientific theory can be classified as truth. The only thing that can be done is to attempt to falsify the theory over and over again reject the theory repeatedly in different situations. Each failed attempt will strengthen the theory and bring it closer to the truth. Hence, Popper claimed that the truth of a hypothesis can never be confirmed.…
