Try To Grow
Ralph Waldo Emerson once wrote “Unless you try to do something beyond what you have already mastered, you will never grow.” Growing involves time and to grow in any particular skill you must use that time and develop whatever it may be that you are wanting to grow and do. As Ralph Waldo Emerson said, you cannot grow unless you try to go on further than what you have already done, growing comes with time and effort and if you were to not try and grow your life would be easy for that but you would not increase any part of your life.
In opposition to what has been said about this, if you do not grow, then you will not have to work on anything. Living with this lifestyle would make your life very easy and boring. Continuing to master what you have already mastered could be a neat thing to do because if you completely master something, which takes 10,000

Most people will talk to their friends about new things that happened in their lives, however, if nothing new happens to you and you only have one skill, then you only have one thing to share and will just be saying the same thing over again. Trying new things is part of living and if you do not try new things, then you will not be able to share new experiences about different things. This past year my friend and I decided to try to play Lacrosse, we looked up how to play, what we needed, and when tryouts were and started practicing so that we could make the team and learn more. Throughout the season we were learning all sorts of new things, whether it be plays or simply the rules of the game; during this we grew our knowledge of the how to play and what the rules were, had we not chosen to play this we would still be completely clueless on what lacrosse even was besides that it was a sport. Since we tried this new thing we had something new to talk about and were able to laugh and talk about our mistakes with other

There are certain steps one must take to achieve growth and a sense of renewal. There are countless ways an individual can grow, and in various fields, as well. The novel “Speak”, by Laurie Halse Anderson, displays growth in the protagonist, Melinda Sordino, as the narrative progresses. Three examples of steps to growth include honesty, positivity, and outside support. Melinda follows these three steps by being honest with herself about her emotions. Throughout the story, Melinda learns how to develop a positive mindset. The third tactic she follows is finding support from others. As Melinda follows these steps of growth, at the end of the book, Melinda has grown into a new mindset and personality, and a renewed version of herself. Therefore, going through developments of growth can ultimately lead to renewal.…

Author Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote, "Unless you try to do something beyond what you have already mastered, you will never grow." I think that Emerson is trying to say that if one never tries to exceed their limits they will never grow. Mastering something is an accumulation of things, as time progresses you build on what you have learned and what you know. I agree with Emerson because he or she will never know what they are capable of, he or she will make more money if make more money if they master something, and they may regret their decision. If one does not try they may never know what they are capable of. If I stopped trying I would not be able to do basic math, but because I kept trying I am now in advanced math. Many great scientist,…

The quote, “The moment we believe that success is determined by an ingrained level of ability we will be brittle in the face of adversity,” by Josh Waitzkin expresses how if people believe that success is based on capability when they face a problem, they’ll tend to give up and fail. Growth mindset is when people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work. Grit is perseverance and passion for long-term goals. Grit and growth mindset has been proven to help one achieve in academics, personal life, and career.…

All in all, progress and growth are not interchangeable and have very different impacts on a life. Progress, like Chesterton claims, is leaving something behind, while growth is keeping things inside. I agree with this, and add to it that in order to truly growth, you also need to revise what you keep inside in order to stay relevant. Progress can be made without growth simply by following…

Connie, a young teen is faced with a life changing experience, forcing her to transform from a young teen to a young adult. A person with a fixed mindset can get to a growth mindset. Carol Dweck has her own specific procedures to this change. As Dweck states the first step is to “Learn to hear your fixed mindset ‘voice’. In other words, when you are facing some kind of challenge or struggle, you tend to hear many negative comments roaming in your mind, but the first step is…

Freshman year; everyone in the high school, Highland, is required to play at least two seasons of sports in their high school career. Now, last year I was head over heels into riding (no pun intended). Feeling this way, I thought I would have no time for any other sports and would just get an exemption from my horse trainer to excuse me from sports. But, my best friend, Kayla Soltys then came into play. Kayla plays two sports, lacrosse and basketball. Kayla was very persistent in asking me to play lacrosse that spring and finally, I gave in. I thought it would be cool to try a new sport and I would have nothing to lose, only things to gain such as endurance and better hand eye coordination. What I did not know was that, lacrosse is so much…

The kids with a growth mind-set are taught that intelligence can be developed through education and hard work. These students are, “...destined for greater academic success and were quite likely to outperform their counterparts,” even with no greater skills. They use challenges as opportunities. This can register to workers as well. When dealt with a problem, workers that, “believe people can change and grow, however, are more confident that confronting concerns in their relationships will lead to resolutions.” The workers see that there is a…

I always excelled in sports and I have always seemed to learn new things quite fast. Lacrosse was different. The day my friend Riley Carr had came down to my house and asked if I wanted to join the Canton Lacrosse Michigan youth team was life changing. I agreed to play but only because it was both of our first times playing and I didn’t want to be embarrassed alone. As you can probably guess, My first few years playing were not very good and I was still unskilled in the game. As soon as 7th grade came around, My Canton team was unstoppable! We were beating the top 10 teams in the state by HUGE numbers! It wasn’t even fair for the other teams. We were winning every tournament and championship we attended, and I was having my breakout season. This journey lasted all the was through middle school and to the day our middle school careers were over, and we were separated to different schools. It was a sad day knowing I would never get to play with these kids again who over the years, I had made very strong bonds with. I would not change a thing about my decision to play lacrosse.…

Lacrosse has been the hardest sport I have tried in my life, but also the sport that motivated me the most to become better and understand the concept of the game. Lacrosse has a universal language of what happens on the field, and also, every individual team has their own different language. I had to learn both and multiple different ones for the multiple teams I have played on. The unique language varies between every teams; the unique language helps the girls on my team tell each other stuff without the other team understanding. The language was difficult for me to understand and pick up, but after a few day, I started to remember it and use it. It helps the game run swiftly and…

Carol Dweck, the author of the article of “Brainology”, states that, “those with a growth mindset had a very straightforward (and correct) idea of effort –the idea that the harder you work the more your ability will grow and that even geniuses have had to work hard for their accomplishments” (Dweck 2). In this example, Dweck argues that people with a growth mindset will strive to achieve their full potential no matter how hard it gets. I figured I have a growth mindset when I was making a science project. I wasn’t that good at creating models, especially one that models the universe. At first I was going to create a poster and plaster it with information I Googled, but I thought about it... Only lazy, less creative people do posters. So why not make a 3D model? I put in more effort than I normally do, gathering materials that I have never used other than just a cardboard poster and colored paper. By turning in this science project, I knew that I could keep building up my skills and also had positive thoughts about my project. Dweck also brings up that, “as a growth mindset individual, you see effort as necessary to grow and master useful skills and knowledge… You are not turned away by fears that you might make an attempt, or even work hard, and that failure is possible” (Dweck…
