For instance, the size of the community group can order for different styles of speech such as didactic or facultative. Another component is the demographics of the group such as age, gender, their level of education, interests, and motivations. These components shape how the group interacts with one another and the overall group dynamic. There are individuals within a group that are both going to be constructive or destructive, and the dietitian’s job is to help facilitate a constructive group. Therefore, Tuckman’s (1965) five stages of group process need to be kept in mind. In the beginning, the dietitian helps to form a nurturing group and then begins to probe challenging questions in order to help brainstorm. After brainstorming it helps to establish the focus the community wants to achieve, and then others will begin to work actively together. The goal of any community work is to try and obtain any small progress to reach everyone’s goals. This all does not happen in one day, and for dietitians who are stationed in communities for some time will then begin to feel a part of the community. It requires a lot of practice, patience, and creative ideas but the positive outcomes outweigh all of the straining work. Communities are diverse and require special attention as patients with the requirement of breaking down barriers. With some of the techniques I mentioned above and involvement in different communities, will it then help a dietitian work with any type of community group. Communities mean a lot to people and it can be a mutual benefit when working with one. It allows you as the dietitian to gain insight from the group, and in turn, the group receives information from you. My community is very important to me and there are many people who work within it in order to promote youth involvement, help with those who suffer drug and substance abuse, and also food insecure issues that some members may face.
