This plot was intriguing as it described a common theme that we can all relate to, death. The topic is relatable since most of us (at one point or another) have dealt with the loss of a loved one and the sadness experienced during this time. However, there was a surprise in the story that really captivated my attention and interest. As expected, Mrs. Mallard experienced an overwhelming amount of emotional pain; she also cried and felt really sad he was gone.…

Before analyzing the main characters of this story, I should state my former perception of death. Because I am a Christian, I have always known where I will end up. Therefore, the thought of death or dying never really made me afraid. I know that Heaven is my final resting place, so I have…

The book was very enlightening and interesting. Although it was gruesome and gory in many parts of the book, I enjoyed reading it overall. I especially enjoyed the less formal writing style and diction of the author Mary Roach. It almost seemed like colloquial language and she was having a conversation with me. This made…

Entry #19 – As I Lay Dying: This book switches from narrator to narrator and does not have a truly set main character. Although we get to experience the story from different points of view it is a bit much too keep switching between narrators especially since the deceased character Addie ends up narrating chapters that take place after her death. I, personally, would have liked it if the book had only one narrator and a set main character to maintain some sort of consistency throughout the book. I found it cruel that Addie’s family was preparing for her death both while she was alive and right in front of her, not really paying any mind as to the affect it may have on her.…

The use of Death as a narrator makes the story seem very confusing and mysterious to the reader because the reader does not know what happens after death or any of the specifics about it. For example, the author introduces Death by stating that “you are going to die” (Zusak, 3)…

In Tuesdays with Morrie, Morrie becomes sick and there is no cure for the disease. One realizes that sickness does not discriminate against any one person. It takes over whomever it chooses. Morrie does have a positive outlook the on entire process, “Everyone knows they're going to die, but nobody believes it” (Albom 81). Morrie has came to terms with death to continue living life to the fullest. In Night, death is everywhere. Veterans of the camp inform Elie that the camp at that time is paradise to what it use to be. The veteran says, “Back then, Buna was a veritable hell. No water, no blankets, less, soup and bread… We were collecting corpses by the hundreds every day” (Wiesel 70). Death surrounded all the prisoners of the camp. Elie had to face the most inhumanity there is-…

The day you realize we are going to die, is the day you change the way you look at things. We are all really “half asleep,” walking around, doing the things we feel we must do, like paying bills, but need to simplify, and learn to really live, learn to love. Morrie says “Once you learn how to die, you learn how to live,” and his words prove true. We all go about our day, not even thinking what can happen at a moments notice. We do not always realize that we may not be here tomorrow. Morrie says that once we have that moment of realization, we live differently. We live as we are going to die tomorrow. Luckily for me, I have had that moment very early in life. My family unfortunately had to deal with a tragedy, the murder of my uncle Junny Rios-Martienez. He was two weeks from the age of 12. They taught me very early that I should live my life like he did, and really live it. My grandmother told me “Life is a gift, don’t let it go to waste by worrying about all the small things, or else you will miss out ”…

Everyone’s reaction to death will always be similar with some slight differences and that is being sad about it. Because of this in mind, the plot was very predictable. My favorite part of the book was how religion got incorporated into several events of the story. It affected many of the characters actions and the way they believed in the happenings of life. The character that I relate to the most is Mary Follet because she is intelligent and sensitive.…

One’s final moments often leave many questions. “What will my final thoughts be?” or “What would my final statement to the world be?” Reflections on death are often avoided because death can be terrifying but, if forced to think about it, what would you do in the final moments of your life? The author of An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge, Ambrose Bierce, wants the reader to focus on his or her final moments and how they might unfold. The author is able to make the reader feel as though he or she is actually sharing the protagonist, Peyton’s, terrifying experience and provokes reaction and deep feeling. The plot is intriguing, unique and takes the reader on an emotional rollercoaster. By using character development, the author is able to make the main character personable and relatable. Additionally, the setting and it’s description, pulls the reader into the text and transports him/her to Peyton’s world. The author hooks the reader with these elements and ultimately forces him or her to reflect on his/her last moments of life.…

Tuesdays with Morrie, was based on a true story about friendship and lessons learned. It’s about a sports writer, Mitch and former sociology professor, Morrie, who is in his last days of life after being diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and their rekindled relationship after many years. They first met on the campus grounds at Brandeis University. This never forgotten relationship was simply picked back up at a crucial time in both Mitch’s and Morrie’s life. After seeing his professor in an interview on the show “Nightline”, Mitch is reminded of a promise he made sixteen years earlier to keep in touch. Since the airing of that show, Mitch met with Morrie every Tuesday to learn and understand all the wisdom and lessons of life. These discussion topics included: death, fear, aging, marriage, family, forgiveness, a meaningful life, and so on. This story took place in Morrie’s study in West Newton, Massachusetts. Overall, this book was about Morrie’s and Mitch’s final class: The Meaning of Life.…
