In a time where gangsta rap swamped the hip hop industry and the east coast against west coast rappers strived for the topmost spot in the music industry. Tupac took a major risk and released his new song “Keep Ya Head Up”. This song also focuses on a man’s softer side and arguably is one of his best individual performances ever. The poem is an important piece of work because while the rappers in 1993 were referring to women as “hoes” and “bitches”, Tupac chose to honor women and refer to them as “sisters”. He acknowledges that life may be tough, but he encourages anyone facing hard times to persevere, keep moving forward and not give up, “And it’s crazy, it seems it’ll never let up, but please… you got to keep ya head up.” (3:24-25). Tupac also assures his listeners that things will work out in the end, “Cause I think we can make it, in fact, I’m sure. And if you fall, stand tall and come back for more. (3:7-8). Tupac also connects his own life to the subjects such as power, race, divisions are all equally important parts of the lyrics. As a man, Tupac talks about how proud he is about being a African American, yet he touches base on the racism he faces because of his skin color. Shakur states that “And in the end it seems I 'm headin for tha pen, I try and find my friends, but they 're blowin in the wind...” (2:16) He does this to address that even though everyday is a war to survive from poverty and the unavoidable negatives in the society, people are turning on the ones around them when most vitally they should be coming jointly as a pack and supporting one another to overcome the neighboring madness. Tupac encourages the women to heal even after facing the incredible pain and suffering. . In the chorus of the song Shakur raps, “Keep ya head up, oooo child things are goinna get easier, ooooo child thing are gonna get brighter”. The underlined unstated idea is not only to try to better your own life through all of the worries but to try to give the next generation more of a chance to not have to experience them. He speaks to the women letting them know progressively things might get worse or better for the good, all they need to do is keep there head up.
