Geographical aspects concerning TURKEY:
Turkey is situated in Anatolia and the Balkans, bordering the Black Sea, between Bulgaria and Georgia, and bordering the Aegean Sea and the Mediterranean Sea, between Greece and Syria. Other neighbours include Iran, Iraq, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria and Armenia The area of Turkey is 783,562 km (land-98%) and 9,820 km (water-2%). The country of Turkey straddles two continents: Asia and Europe. The European portion of Turkey, known as Thrace (Turkish: Trakya), encompasses 3% of the total area but is home to more than 10% of the total population. Istanbul, the largest city of Europe and Turkey, has a population of 11,372,613. Thrace is separated from the Asian portion of Turkey by the Bosporus , the Sea of Marmara , and the Dardanelles . Istanbul, (known as Constantinople until 1930) is located on both the east and west sides of the Bosporus strait so it straddles both what are traditionally considered Europe and Asia. However, Turkey's capital city of Ankara is fully outside of Europe and on the Asian continent.
Recent historical aspects concerning TURKEY:
WWI ended with the destruction of four empires: Russian, German, Austro-Hungarian and Ottoman. As a result, Constantinople was occupied- fact that led to the Turkish national movement. By 18 September 1922, the occupying armies were expelled, and the new Turkish state was established. On 1 November, the newly founded parliament formally abolished the Sultanate, thus ending 623 years of Ottoman rule. Under the leadership of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, who became the first president of Turkey, a new state was formed. In 1945, Turkey became charter member of the United Nations, in 1952, it joined NATO, and in 1974 Turkey occupied northern Cyprus.
