This ever replenishing land is the backdrop for many allegorical stories which are touted as fables of the great heroes of history. From Johnny Appleseed, walking across America spreading food and becoming one with nature, to Lewis and Clark, charting the land and venturing into Indian territory, these are the figure heads of the frontier and colonialism in America. Being able to make a fortune working on a farm and selling to an investor left open the prospect of becoming an investor yourself and thus the American Dream became promising. Based on a capitalistic society, making a fortune for yourself after coming from nothing seems like a true promised land. This idea brought on large groups of immigrants from all over Europe seeking new, prosperous lives. Native American genocide is often ignored in schools so as to not draw attention to unsightly details of American past and slavery is frequently minimized. Instead of talking about those who have been marred by American history, the focus is typically placed on those heroicized figures like Paul Bunyan and Johnny Appleseed. The romance these people represented is seen all over America but largely still shows itself as the American Dream. This idea has become more focused on isolationism, particularly after the 2016 US election. The dream no longer includes immigrants as the source of US economic growth and now pushes to see lower class citizens rising up out of poverty. The distaste for immigrants has become extremely volatile and dangerous, with people of color being the targets of many hate crimes.
