When tanks were brought into the battle to attempt to fight, they simply got stuck in the thick mud and that caused little effect to attack the opponents.

Machine Guns were very successful weapons that were used throughout WWI. They would be set up on front line trenches and were able to fire over 150 rounds a minute and was able to sweep the landscape whilst still firing. This added excellent and accurate fire power against the enemy.
Machine Guns were responsible for the deaths of thousands of soldiers who went 'over the top' as they could be moved across the landscape whilst firing and chopping down waves and waves of soldiers. The only disadvantages machine guns had were that they were very heavy and required 2 to 4 soldiers to actually use.
This was invented in 1886 and fired smokeless cartridges. However, it had a very big practical design flaw; it had to be loaded in a nose to tail fashion. This resulted in slow loading as the operator had to be wary of one round hitting the primer of the cartridge in front which caused a most unwelcome explosion.
British soldiers used arguably the best rifle available during WWI, the Lee-Enfield rifle. It had a 10 cartridge magazine, far greater than any other
