This novel inspired me so much; it's unbelievable what one person can do. He started out by himself but with God's faith in him he built a community. The novel was difficult to put down, but I did place it down for awhile. I would recommend this novel to many people. There was one main theme in the novel that had hit me the most and it was the drug addict theme. I think the reason it grew on my so much is that I have a family member who is struggling with drugs himself, and I could relate to the novel…
good and influencing book, and taught me a lot of things I should take out of…
I liked this novel very much because it shows how precious life is, and that drinking and driving is NEVER a good idea. The story makes me realize that with maturity, comes difficult choices, and you must always be wise. Things like this happen every day and people always think, “Oh it won’t happen to me,” but you never know. I would recommend this book to my friends because I think the story line would influence their choices greatly. I think it would give them a better perspective on making good…
You must pick up a copy of this novel because is so breath-taking and full of excitement, yet it is full of thrilling and love scenes. Once you read you won’t be able to stop because it will have your attention and every detail will be pictured in your head. Also if you like reading about violence, drugs and teen related issues then this is the book for you. It has suspense full parts that leave you wanting for more.…
It has very tough issues and a lot of language. This would be a book for upper middle school to high school. This is a book you would have to be very careful with, you would need a lot of parent permission and a class/student that you could have great discussion with. However, that is not to say that it is not worth reading. I think that a lot of students today have a hard time backing down from an issue, even if it is meaningless, so this could really be relatable. Some strategies that could be used with this book include predicting, inferring, and making connections. I think that inferring could be a great strategy for this book because you can use the pictures and the text to find out what the author is really…
One of the most promising and effective treatment of CSA is trauma focused CBT (TF-CBT). The core components of TF-CBT include, social skills building, parent management training, emotional regulation, anger management, relaxation skills development, behavioural skills training, psychoeducation about CSA exposure, procedures for trauma and personal safety skills ( Cohen et al, 2006) (as cited in Misurell & Springer, 2011). This therapy technique provides sexually abused children the coping skills and compensatory strategies to manage /reduce various behavioural and emotional difficulties associated with CSA. It addresses the negative effects of CSA by helping sexually abused children to identify and cope with their emotions, thoughts and behaviours.…
I enjoyed this book thoroughly and always kept me intrigued until the end. It had small twists in it that were rather easy to interpret but it was also very interesting. I don’t particularly relate to this book, although situations that I’ve endured have changed my perspective on life, in a positive aspect, and made me unprejudiced and versatile and not so…
Tweak is a tale of addiction describing the experiences of Nic Sheff, who was for many years addicted to various drugs. Meth and heroin to begin with, later coke and mixing different drugs (Tweak). This book was actually written in response to a book by David Sheff called Beautiful Boy. It was about the experience of dealing with his son's addictions and their consequences for his family.…
The book that I chose to do is Street Pharm by Allison van Diepen, the book has 297 pages, the reason I chose this book is personally I am tired novels taking place years before I am born. This novel pertains to urban problems and one kids' attempt to survive in the pressures of present day Brooklyn. Within the novel, there are several subplots, one being his love interest, Alyse, and Ty's fight to stay in school. As well as, his fight not to lose money or control of his territory. It is interesting to watch this young man, balance these things in his life and not let them interfere with each other.…
I would recommend this book to anyone who needs some inspiration and motivation in their life. It is very interesting because it doesn't just focus on the author. It refers to many inspirational people who were fearless in way worse situations than what we face today. The next book I will probably end up reading is from what the website recommended me on my wall of books when I am finished with reading this…
This would definitely be a book I would recommend to people because there are very good life lessons in it. For instance, there is a limit to strict…
He had a lot of life lessons that really caught my attention but I did narrowed it down to three of them so I was able to write about them. To conclude, this book really brought out the inner self in me because it made think about life in a different way I’ve never imagined…
I chose this book because I was looking through the Commandants reading list, and it sounded interesting.…
Numerous emotions were evoked as I was reading Tweak by Nic Sheff. The main emotion I felt was sadness. My best friend Jack from high school went down a path that reminded me eerily of Nic's path. We met during sophomore year of high school in Chemistry class. He was a super quiet, clean-cut kid. His parents were both doctors, and he lived in an old mansion in the countryside. This sort of parallels Nic’s privileged life, as he starts the novel, “I was seventeen and been accepted at prestigious universities across the country and I figured a little partying was due me,” (1). This is just like Jack. He was planning on going attend college to study chemical engineering, but his addiction to heroin prevented that. He told me once that his addictive habits all started off with weed. On page one, Nic also notes that his drug problems began because he started smoking weed and drinking alcohol too young. Stories like Jack and Nic’s bring so much sadness to me because these boys threw away so much of their potential for drugs.…
I had always been told this book was incredible and I never read it because it just didn't seem like my type of book, but this course gave me the opportunity to read this book and really reflect on it. I suppose there are many different ways that I could use this book in both my personal and professional life. All of the different things going on in this book really helped me to notice some of the signs that children who suffer from abuse and neglect will often show. Children coming to school in smelly clothes, having random bruises appearing each week, looks of malnourishment, change of bruise stories, etc. are all tell-tale signs that maybe there's a bigger issue going on in the home than meets the eye. I have a passion for Social Work and working with children and adults who have been affected by alcohol and substance abuse is where I want to spend most of my time, so this book really hit me in my emotions and pulled at my heart strings. This book has opened up my eyes to see the cruelty that we face in this world and that nobody is safe, not even a small child. If nothing else, this book at least has made me want to be nicer to children and to make sure I can identify signs of abuse and neglect in children. This book makes me so much more excited to be a helper after reading it because I'm going to strive to get victims of this severe abuse out of the home and into a safe area. Also, this book makes…
