on many people.
In the first book, Twilight, the theme that unselfish deeds have a positive impact on many people is conveyed when Bella was by her truck in the school parking lot.
Edward saved Bella from a car that would have killed her by using his super speed to run over to the car and then he stopped the car from hitting her. Bella said in Twilight:
“I saw several things simultaneously… The adrenaline rush seemed to make my brain work much faster, and I was able to absorb in clear detail several things at once. Edward Cullen was standing four cars down from me, staring at me in horror… The dark van was skidding, tires locked and squealing against the brakes, spinning wildly across the ice of the parking lot. It was going to hit the back corner of my truck, and I was standing between them… Just before I heard the shattering crunch of the van folding around the truck bed, something hit me, hard, but not from the direction I was expecting.” (Meyers 55)
Even though all the people watching could have figured out that he was not human, he made the split-second decision to save her. While some may argue that Edward only saved Bella so he wouldn’t drink her blood when she got hit, he obviously saved her because he is a very unselfish person and he loved Bella already. It is also shown when Bella must give herself up to the vampire, James, because he threatened to kill her mother. This relates to the theme because, although Bella knew that James would probably kill her, she wanted her mother to be safe from
James.
In the second book, New Moon, the theme is shown when Edward and his family leave Forks to protect Bella from himself and other vampires. He did this because, although it hurt both of them very deeply, he needed Bella to stay safe, and he thought she live a happier life without him. It affected them both positively afterward because when Edward came back, it made Bella and his relationship even stronger than it was before. Also, when he left it allowed Bella to become best friends with Jacob, something that probably would not have happened if Edward had not left her.
In the next book, Eclipse, Edward was going to let Bella be with Jacob if she wanted to even though he did not like her being with him. He was afraid that Jacob may hurt her because he was a werewolf. However, he wanted Bella to happy more than anything, so he let her hang out with him in La Push, the reservation on which Jacob lives. This made Jacob happy because he was able to be with Bella, it made Bella happy because she got to be with her best friend, and it made Edward happy because all he wanted was for Bella to be happy.
In the final book, Breaking Dawn, Edward was willing to make many sacrifices for Bella. Edward and Bella conceived a child. The baby was part vampire so it grew very fast in her womb and the baby was hurting her because it was as strong as a vampire. Edward was going to let Bella have a child with Jacob as long as she let him abort that vampire baby. Bella did not want to do it because she loved the unborn child too much to have it killed. Another example of an unselfish deed is how Jacob was going to fight against his whole pack because they were going to kill Bella. Jacob was willing to sacrifice his life just to save Bella from his pack. If he had not done this than he would not have imprinted on Bella’s child and he probably would have just run away again because he could not be near Bella, for she had rejected him.
