Two Groups In The Outsiders
In many situations there are groups or opposing sides, but there might be characters who don’t fit in either of the groups. The outsiders. In the novel The Outsiders by S.E Hinton there are two groups, the Greasers and the Socs. Characters fit in these two categories, but there is also a hidden category, the outsiders. This is a category where characters who don’t truly fit in the groups of the Greasers and the Socs go. However, there are rarely any outsiders, they are special characters. I believe Ponyboy Curtis, Sherri Valance, and Johnny Cade all lie in this secret category. PonyBoy and Johnny are both technically classified as Greasers. However, they are different from Greasers. For example, in the text Soda chants, “I am a Greaser. I am
JD and a hood. I blacken the name of our fair city. I beat up people. I rob gas stations. I am a menace to society. Man, do I have fun!” Soda’s description of Greasers does not fit Ponyboy’s or Johnny’s personality. Another reason they are different is they want more. Greasers usually settle in a cycle of bad jobs and bad homes. Ponyboy wanted to get out of lousy neighborhoods. In the text he states, “I wasn’t gonna live in a lousy neighborhood all my life.” On the other hand, Johnny saved children from a burning church. Even Randy was surprised Johnny had done this. However, Ponyboy and Johnny weren’t the only ones who were outsiders, so was Sherri. Sherri or Cherry Valance was technically classified as a Soc. Cherry as a Soc is fake and not real. On the inside when talking to others she is real and is truthful. Cherry wants a good rep as a Soc, but also wants the freedom of a Greaser. Cherry becomes a spy for the Greasers, she is a Greaser on the inside, but a Soc on the outside that is why she is an outsider. In addition, the outsiders all have a similar realization.
