Indian states are full of canals used for irrigation and as water transport in different parts of the country. These water transports of India play a very important role in irrigation of crops in drought region of India such as Rajasthan and Tamil nadu. Indian governments have launched many projects for rivers Inter link and National Waterways.
INDIRA GHANDI CANAL:-
Indira Gandhi Canal starts from the Harike Barrage at Sultanpur, a few kilometres below the confluence of the Sutlej and Beas rivers in Punjab state. Irrigation facilities to the north-western region of Rajasthan, a part of the Thar Desert. It consists of the Rajasthan feeder canal (with the first 167 km in Punjab and Haryana and the remaining 37 km in Rajasthan) and 445 km of the Rajasthan main canal which is entirely within Rajasthan.This canal enters into Haryana from Punjab near Lohgarh village of Haryana,then running in western part of district Sirsa it enters into Rajasthan near Kharakhera village (Tehsil:Tibbi,district:-Hanumangarh) of Rajasthan. The IGNP traverses seven districts of Rajasthan: Barmer, Bikaner, Churu, Hanumangarh, Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, and Sriganganagar. Upper Ganges Canal:-
The Upper Ganges canal is the original Ganges Canal, which starts at the Bhimgoda Barrage near Har ki Pauri at Haridwar, traverses Meerut and Bulandshahr and continues to Nanu in Aligarh district, where it bifurcates into the Kanpur and Etawah branches.
A highway running along the Upper Ganges canal has been proposed several times. In 2010, it was turned since it would "lead to uprooting of around 100,000 trees, damaging the Fauna & Flora and destroying the natural habitat of wildlife" At some places boundary of Hastinapur Wildlife Sanctuary is as close as about 500-600 meter away only from the proposed UGC Expressway site.
