26 April 2014 The short story “Two Kinds,” is a story in which a young Chinese child is struggling with her mother that wants so badly to change her into this average American girl. Or so the daughter thought, her mother was trying to get her daughter to understand that she can achieve anything that strives to do as long as she focuses and puts her mind to it. Jing-Mei thought her mother was trying to control her life and she just wanted to create her own identity. Jing-Mei’s mother’s expectations and her interpretation of what her mother expected represent the differences in the cultures and its consequence on the connection amongst the two of them. In the beginning of the story, Jing-Mei's mother tries to control her daughter's life. Jing-Mei mother tries to push her daughter into being a prodigy. Regrettably, Jing-Mei did not want to be what her mother wanted her to be her and her mother does not share the same views on things. Jing-Mei wants to discover herself separately from her what and how mother feels. She wants to prove that she can become a success on her own efforts and strength of mind. Jing-Mei's mother tried to give her with some tests from movies and other things that she saw on TV and elsewhere. After jing-Mei failed most of the tests she began to lose interest and becomes frustrated that her mother kept pushing her to do things that she just didn’t want to do. “I won't let her change, I promised myself. I won't be what I'm not”.
