Twon Gweno Wedding Song Analysis
An ethnicity that I do not identify myself with would be the Lango people in Uganda. The song that I have chosen to use as a snapshot of this ethnicity is a Twon Gweno Wedding song because marriage is super important to the Lango people. These people to this day still use a practice called polygyny (when a man has more than one wife) and has an asking price of about 14 heads of cattle and a great deal of other animals/goods such as goats, cloth, cooking pots, and hoes. Many can not afford the bride price so young boys start thinking about this dilemma and how to solve it. If the boy gains support from his mother, she can see if cattle from her husband’s heard can be put aside for the bride price. Boys are “linked to their sisters” which means

Soul music, is music that was originated in black America gospel singing, is closely related to rhythm and blues, and is characterized by intensity of feeling and earthiness. Soul music is more of a calming type of music, it's has songs from regret and hate, to love and happiness. The song I've chose was "When a Man Loves a Woman" by Percy Sledge. This song is somewhat slow and also talks about love. And the instruments in this song just make it more enjoyable.…

The short story “The Bride Comes to Yellow Sky,” written by Stephen Crane reflects on issues surrounding the eighteen centuries in the east and west of Texas. Crane reveals historical pieces by describing the area and surrounding of the east, which seems undeveloped and not so modernizes. During the eighteen centuries there were conflicts between the east and west resulting in different cultural and social matters because of Jack’s hesitation about bringing his new bride to Yellow Sky. There is also a reference to the Saloon, a term used back then for a bar. The author emphasized on the normal occurrences of gun fighting because during those days everyone had guns. The main focus is on the historical issues based on the abundant land, cultural matters and by the use of the word “Saloon” which refers to long ago.…

In Michelle Goldberg’s article “Marry or Else,” she explains how forced marriages and honor killings are not just a part of a developing-world issue. Goldberg clarifies how these types of marriages also occur in America and England. Goldberg cites examples of young women, considered children are in fact being married off to old or mature men. Many girls adhere to forced marriages because if they do not they are threatened to be financially cut off or to be dead in the eyes of their family. Goldberg reports that these girls come from the United States and England and are shipped off to a man somewhere in India that they have never met or seen in their life. Goldberg explains that the parents promise their daughter to another family to wed their…

I enjoy listening to this song anyways as it is in my native language and one of my top childhood songs. The song is about a couple who is in love with each other but when the guy has to leave for the US, they broke up. He later returns and the love is still there. This is a very cute story and I love singing the lyrics that describes his feelings for her as he was away. If I broke up and get back together with my boyfriend, I would want this to be our scenario, that we broke up and got back together because of distance or circumstances, not because we wanted this. I also love how there are english lyrics sung with deep emotion in the song: “I will be back for you.” The music video for the song is also very heartwarming and brings a smile to my face whenever I think of it. If I got back together with my ex, I could listen to this song to remind me of my feelings for him. This song is a great song that evokes strong emotions from me and makes me think about love and how strong it is to overcome lots.…

December 5, 2016, the dancers of Abraham in Motion brought Jiri Kylian’s Petite Mort and Six Dances to stage in a new and powerful way. Choreographer, Kyle Abraham married the life of men and women during the 17th century to the modern life of the 21st century. As opposed to the original piece, Abraham’s female dancers were more independent in the sense of needing their male companions to portray their life. Tonight’s showcased dancers were: Vinson Fraley; current student at Tisch School of the Arts, Tamisha Guy; recently selected as one of Dance Magazine’s Top 25 to Watch, Catherine Ellis Kirk; a graduate of New York University Tisch School of the Arts, and Jeremy Jae Neal; Western Michigan University alum. The music, originally composed by Mozart, creates a sense of wit and fresh…

In the midst of mourning and healing after the death of two beloved band members, The Allman Brothers Band released the album ‘Brothers and Sisters’ on August 1st in 1973. During the recording of the band’s previous album ‘Eat a Peach’ in 1971 Duane Allman, the lead guitarist and co-founder of the band, died tragically in a motorcyle accident. Heartbreakingly, the band had to endure the death of another bandmate, Berry Oakley at the age of 24. Much like the death of Duane Allman, Berry died mid-recording of the album ‘Brothers and Sisters’ due to a motorcycle accident just a few blocks away from where Duane’s accident occurred. Berry Oakley’s talent remained on the first two tracks of the album, ‘Wasted Words’ and ‘Ramblin’ Man’.…

In past events females were often sexualized and diminished while being stripped of all their pride. The men’s only pleasure was treating women with disdain but they only showed weakness when it was time to bare more children. Whilst Igbo women no longer sat back and laid low bemoaning themselves they turned their tragic situations into globalizing victories. As the outcomes of colonization kept pushed through, in Nigeria harvesting crops faced rapid cultural changes. While they still do not harvest yams, “a man’s crop” (Achebe 22), and symbol of “manliness…[and] great [ness] (Achebe 33), the “coco-yams, beans and cassava” (Achebe 22).…

The third Servant Song found in Isaiah draws a comparrison between the sin of Israel with the obidient service of the Servant. Within this writing we also see that the Faithful Servant will be persecuted but has the confidence of his victory. “The Lord God has given me the tongue of those who are taught, that I may know how to sustain with a word him who is weary. Morning by morning he awakens; he awakens my ear bto hear as those who are taught. The Lord God has opened my ear, and I was not rebellious; I turned not backward. I gave my back to those who strike, and my cheeks to those who pull out the beard; I hid not my face from disgrace and spitting. But the Lord God helps me; therefore I have not been disgraced; therefore I have set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be put to shame.”…
