In the fall of 1977, Michael Stephens, sole proprietor of Stephens Construction, asked Warren Sanders, a local real estate broker, to find a large piece of land that would be suitable for development into a single family residential project. Sanders located several parcels and found a homestead staked and owned by Robert and Arlene Cross. Sanders contacted and met with Robert Cross in February of 1978 and stated that he was looking for land for a developer and had asked Cross to sign a listing agreement, but he refused. In September of 1978, Anders contacted Cross again and showed an offer from Stephens. Cross rejected this and two following offers.…

In response to Sony’s low priced and high performance 1270 projector, Barco should continue with its scheduled BD700 and accelerate development for the BD800. Though the BD700 is the first digitally controlled projector with scanning frequency, it still would not be as competitive against Sony’s new model 1270. Therefore, Barco will have to launch this product with a significant price differential from the 1270 so that customers will be discouraged from upgrading. Their ultimate short term goal should be for buyers to purchase their moderately priced BD700 version over the more expensive Sony 1270. That is not to say they should create a price war with Sony, but merely defend their market share within the data segment.…

The atmosphere in a Trident nuclear submarine is generally calm and quiet. Even pipe joints are cushioned to prevent noise that might tip off a pursuer. The Trident ranks among the world's most dangerous weaponsCswift, silent, armed with 24 long‑range missiles carrying 192 nuclear warheads. Trident crews are the cream of the Navy crop, and even the sailors who fix the plumbing exhibit a white‑collar decorum. The culture aboard ship is a low‑key, collegial one in which sailors learn to speak softly and share close quarters with an ever‑changing roster of shipmates. Being subject to strict security restrictions enhances a sense of elitism and pride. To move up and take charge of a Trident submarine is an extraordinary feat in the NavyCfewer than half the officers qualified for such commands ever get them. When Michael Alfonso took charge of the USS Florida, the crew welcomed his arrival. They knew he was one of themCa career Navy man who joined up as a teenager and moved up through the ranks. Past shipmates remembered him as basically a loner, who could be brusque but generally pleasant enough. Neighbors on shore found Alfonso to be an unfailingly polite man who kept mostly to himself.…

    Wesco Case

Late in June 1997, Jim Piraino, VP marketing for WESCO Distribution, Inc. (see Exhibit 1), was preparing for a yearly review meeting with his CEO Roy Haley. At the top of the agenda was the performance of the National Accounts (NA) program during the first half of 1997 (see Exhibit 2). Haley had ambitious plans for WESCO over the next five years. He had charted out a course that called for an annual growth rate of 6% to 8% in sales, and more important, an annual increase of 12% to 16% in profitability. "In 1996, we were a $2.2 billion company with an EBIT of around 3%. I want us to be a $3 billion company with an EBIT of over 5% by the year 2000. This target is very much achievable. In the last few years, our customers have made significant changes to their business processes. These changes provide us a unique opportunity to provide greater value to our customers while improving our market position and profitability. I want WESCO to be recognized as a leader in learning, adapting, and responding to changes in customer needs," said Haley. Although acquisitions of other companies were expected to contribute over half the revenue growth, most of this business was not expected to exceed current profitability levels. WESCO’s current NA program, which had been initiated in 1994 as a response to the changing market dynamics, was expected to deliver the additional revenue growth and obtain the desired increases in profitability. Yet, as of mid-1997, the NA program had not delivered the expected increases in sales and profitability. Haley had now asked Piraino to examine the NA program and present recommendations for improvements. “We need to get more out of our NA effort. This is our best growth avenue with existing customers and new prospects. We have to generate significantly better results with this program," Haley had told Piraino.…

"At Taco Bell, we buy our beef from the same trusted brands you find in the supermarket, like Tyson Foods. We start with 100 percent USDA-inspected beef. Then we simmer it in our proprietary blend of seasonings and spices to give our seasoned beef its signature Taco Bell taste and texture. We are proud of the quality of our beef and identify all the seasoning and spice ingredients on our website. Unfortunately, the lawyers in this case elected to sue first and ask questions later -- and got their "facts" absolutely wrong. We plan to take legal action for the false statements being made about our food."…

Disinvestment of a company basically means the action of an organization or government selling or liquidating an asset or subsidiary. It is also known as “divestiture“. It may also be a reduction in capital expenditure, or the decision of a company not to replenish depleted capital goods. Thus Disinvestment refers to the sale or liquidation of an asset or subsidiary of an organization or equity and bond capital by the government to the private sector. It also implies the sale of government’s loan capital in PSUs through securitization. However, it is the government and not the PSUs who receive money from disinvestment.…
