not take him seriously and sent him to Leipzig to study law at the age of sixteen. While he was at Leipzig he realized how much he was obsessed with astronomy. He bought books and instruments and stayed up late to observe the night sky. One night while he was observing he noticed that Jupiter and Saturn passed very close to one another. He then realized that Copernicus predictions were not at all accurate. Realizing that studying law would do him no good he then put all his focus on astronomy. At the age of nineteen he began his research on astronomy he affiliated himself several famous astronomers and began to propose his ideas to them. He eventually convinced them that if they wanted precise evidence then they would need more precise and complex instruments. Since telescopes were not invented at the time he suggested large quadrants. Setting these up required a large amount of effort. One night an astronomical event changed his life forever, he noticed that the sky that night was unusually bright.
As he was observing he noticed that a new star was in the sky and it was a supernova. This star has only been sighted twice in history. Many astronomers tried to predict when this star would show but all attempts were unsuccessful. That night Brahe had just finished working on a new instrument called the sextant. The instrument could peer further into the sky than anything that had been invented. He was finally able to find the source and the movement of the supernova. Brahe said that the new star did not move and was located in the eighth sphere of the earth. He published this and then soon shot to fame. During his youth he got into a dual with a boy and lost part of his nose and then wore a gold or silver piece to cover up the hole where he had been
struck. Brahe somehow got very ill wth a kidney sickness and died on October 24, 1601. It is said that he could have suffered a mercury poisoning. They believe this because they dug up his grave and found high Mercury level in his grave, but it was later concluded that he did not die from Mercury poisoning the high Mercury levels were caused by the plate that covered his nose and was not made of gold or silver it was made from iron or zinc.
