The patient complains of back pain that is constant and throbbing on a 4/10 pain scale with noted radiation to lower extremities. Patient had resumed ibuprofen over-the-counter to control his back pain. Tylenol was ineffective for the patient. He is not able to take any narcotics or stronger NSAIDs due to stomach issues and also intolerance to opiods. He states that he felt better and the pain decreases after the acupuncture treatments. On 2/22/16, patient’s back pain is on 4/10 pain scale with no radiation. His acupuncture treatments for three sessions did help him significantly for his back pain. Per verification, patient had completed 7 acupuncture therapies. Acupuncture is the insertion and removal of filiform needles to reduce pain, reduce inflammation, increase blood flow, improve range of motion, and promote relaxation in an anxious patient, and also reduce muscle spasm. Per ACOEM, ranges from weekly for a month to 20 appointments over 6 months. Generally, no more than 8 to 12 sessions; however CA MTUS states that it may extended if functional improvement is documented.
