Type 2 Diabetes
Type 2 diabetes is a chronic illness that is a result of the body's insulin not functioning correctly. It was formerly called adult-onset or insulin-dependent. It is also the most common kind of diabetes accounting for about 90 percent of all diabetes cases. Type 2 diabetes can also cause obesity and high cholesterol. About 6 percent of the population suffers from diabetes while about one-third of those who do have it, do not know about it. Insulin is a chemical that is released by the body to control blood sugar levels. It allows glucose to enter cells where it is used for daily functions. When blood glucose cannot be absorbed into cells, the energy cannot be expended and is then expelled through the kidneys. It starts as some of the body's cells develop a resistance to insulin. This causes the liver to function without control, so it continues to release glucose. Without the cells picking up glucose high levels of glucose in the blood persist, which is a condition called hyperglycemia. Some symptoms are excessive thirst, urinating frequently, and hunger. Fatigue can also be a sign of diabetes. Diabetic ketonacidoses can also occur in people with type 2 diabetes. This is when the cells do not get enough glucose and begin to burn fat. When the cells burn fat for energy it results in the release of waste products, know as ketones. High levels of ketones in the body can produce large amounts of acid, and if not tended to, will cause a person to go into a coma or can possibly be fatal. Diabetes is usually diagnosed by testing blood glucose levels. These tests tell doctors if the body is using insulin correctly by detecting how much glucose stays in the blood stream. Most doctors recommend daily exercise and strict diets to treat type 2 diabetes. Medication is also an option for those who cannot overcome diabetes with just diet and exercise. There is no single cause of type 2 diabetes but there are many contributing factors that can put

Normally, blood glucose levels are tightly controlled by insulin, a hormone produced by the pancreas. Insulin lowers the blood glucose level. When the blood glucose elevates (for example, after eating food), insulin is released from the pancreas to normalize the glucose level. In patients with diabetes, the absence or insufficient production of insulin causes hyperglycemia. Diabetes is a chronic medical condition, meaning that although it can be controlled, it lasts a lifetime.…

Type II Diabetes Mellitus is an adult-onset diabetes that affects 90% of the diabetes patients. It is when the body does not recognize the insulin being produced by the pancreas, or not enough is produced. Insulin is a hormone that causes different cells to take up glucose for energy. Resistance to insulin causes the build up of glucose in the blood, which causes improper functions of cells and blood circulation, damage to nerves and blood vessels. The prevalence of type II diabetes is highest in African Americans among ethnic and racial groups. African American type II diabetic populations have tripled in 1993 when compared to 1963.…

Diabetes is a group of diseases that is caused by high levels of blood glucose and is caused by defects in insulin production. Diabetes is one of the leading causes of death and disability in the United States. There are a few different types of Diabetes, There is type 1, which used to be called juvenile diabetes and is caused by the body’s immune system attacking and destroying its own insulin producing beta cells in the pancreas. Type 1 accounts for about five percent while type 2 accounts for around ninety to ninety five percent of all diagnosed cases (Services, 2011). Type 2 will occur when the body cannot use the insulin produced effectively or does not produce enough insulin and usually happens in adults over the age of forty but is becoming more common for younger age groups.…

Diabetes Mellitus is a metabolic disease that occurs when a body is unable to produce insulin, is unable to adequately use the insulin produced, or is unable to produce enough insulin for what the body needs, and therefore results in a body not being able to process sugars properly. There are two main types of diabetes. Type 1 is where the body does not produce any insulin and so the person is dependent on taking insulin shots to survive. Type 2 is where the body can produce insulin but may not be able to produce enough to meet the needs of the body or the body is not properly using the insulin so the person has high blood sugars. Living a healthy lifestyle can decrease your chance at getting Type 2 diabetes (Milchovich, S. K., & Dunn-Long,…

Type 2 diabetes occurs when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin to maintain a normal blood glucose level, or your body is unable to use the insulin that is produced (NHS Choices). You are likely to develop type 2 diabetes if you are over the age of 40, have a relative with the condition or are overweight. A person is normally thought to have type 2 diabetes if he or she does not have type 1 diabetes (insulin-dependent) or monogenetic diabetes (WHO). Patients that suffer from type 2 diabetes generally are given dietary guidance so that they can manage their blood sugar and they are also advised to take their blood sugar once a day to make sure that it is regular. Patients should also increase physical activity and control their weight. It is important that diabetes type 2 is controlled so that it doesn’t progressively get worse and lead to diabetes type 1 diabetes which would mean the patient would become insulin dependent.…

Type one diabetes is a life threatening disease with no cure known, but only treatment to help maintain a normal life. The exact origin of type one diabetes is not known and no known way to prevent the disease from occurring. Many signs are known to help catch the diabetes early on before it becomes life threatening. Some common symptoms are constant hunger, weight loss, increased thirst, and urinating frequently. Type two diabetes is also a life threatening disease but does not require as much attention as type one diabetes. The main cause is obesity and lack of exercise, which is the cause for the low supply of insulin in the body. Type two diabetes can be reversible with a balanced diet and exercise because type two is most commonly brought on from obesity at a more mature age. Most times the treatment can be just a healthy, planned diet, but some worse cases may have to inject insulin in their body frequently.…

Type II diabetes is a severe form of diabetes caused by inadequate production of insulin and resulting in anomalous metabolism of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. Diabetes usually appears in children and slowly progresses by the increase of sugar levels in the blood stream and urine. Facts show that 90%-95% of people with diabetes have type II diabetes (ADA, 2006). This is usually caused by lack of nutrition or inactivity. Type II diabetes is usually found in adults because children start out with Type I.…

Type 2 diabetes is very common in the United States. Most people who get type 2 diabetes are overweight. This is because being overweight causes the body to not be able to use insulin because there is too much fat. Having a BMI 25 or higher increases your risk of having type 2 diabetes. If a person does have a BMI of 25 or more they should look to lose weight. Losing 5% to 10% of your body weight lowers your chance of getting type 2 diabetes. Another way to prevent type 2 diabetes is by eating healthy. By eating healthier the body will lose weight or be at the right weight so that the body will use insulin properly. If overweight, it is important to eat healthy foods in small amounts all day because large amounts of foods cause blood sugars to be high. Lastly, it is important that all people stay active so they lower their chances of getting type 2 diabetes. By exercising your body becomes more sensitive to its insulin. Physical exercise helps improve blood glucose control and can prevent or delay type 2 diabetes, also it can positively affect blood pressure, cardiovascular events, living a longer life, and the overall quality of…
