Type II Diabetes is a rapidly growing disease in our country. Unfortunately, many of us know at least one person who battles through this metabolic disease. I chose the article titled The sugar disease-understanding type 2 diabetes mellitus written by Georgina Casey to review and learn from. This article was found in the Continuing Professional Development +Nurses Journal published in March 2011. My grandmother has battled with this disease for many years and it has slowly progressed to cause multiple health complications. She continues to battle this disease both physically and financially. With an extensive family history and seeing the effects it can have on a person, I found it important to educate myself and learn more about this disease.

Diabetes, a metabolic disorder, consists of high plasma glucose concentrations (PGC) and abnormal insulin activity in the body. This is caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. I feel it opened my eyes to the complexity of this disease. It makes me realize that taking care of yourself through a proper lifestyle and diet can reduce the likelihood of developing the disease but it will not eliminate the risk. Those genetic dispositions and underlying mechanisms in your body control the show. The information in this article increases my education that I can use to better inform my patients and lead them down the right path of treatment. I can understand what is causing symptoms and signs of the disease as well as understand how certain therapeutic drugs target these mechanisms. I hope that one day the number of individuals with this disease will decrease dramatically across the globe. It will decrease health care costs, family disparity and increase individuals overall
