Types of Comedy in Much Ado About Nothing
Parody:
A spoof or send-up by satiric ironic imitations.

Bathos:
From the sublime to the ridiculous; producing a ludicrous end.
EG: The courtship of Claudio and Hero being traditional and pleasant to then be victimised by misunderstanding and rumour and still ending up in marriage. Benedick and Beatrice's quarreling also, ridiculously, ending in marriage.

Satire:
The use of irony or sarcasm in which human folly is held up to scorn or ridicule.
EG: the way Benedick and Beatrices constant witticisms.

Farce:
Aims at entertaining the audience by means of unlikely, extravagant and improbable situations.
EG: All the confusion of Hero supposedly being involved with another man when in fact she was seen with another woman in unusual clothing. Furthermore, the fact that Claudio is then willing (in the end) to marry someone different, despite being tricked into it and the woman actually being Hero, seems unlikely if he really did love Hero.

Burlesque:
Over the top actions or thought/speech pattern.
EG: The way Benedick is so against marriage he lists ridiculous and outrageous situations he'd rather be in than in marriage. The way he hates women so much he would rather pull his eyeball out with a pen (loose 'translation').

Unconventional Characters:
Characters unfit for their role - their gender, class, job etc.
EG: Beatrice is unfit for her role as both a woman in this era and for a 'lady' of her class for she speaks to Benedick in such a distasteful manner displaying her opposition to marriage (contextually unconventional). She also speaks to him in prose which are often asociated more with lowly characters of a lesser

    From a historical standpoint woman used to be treated with little importance. From the Elizabethan period to today’s society the role of woman, the definition of true love, and marriage has all changed exceptionally. Beatrice represents what all women should be, independent and self-assertive. Many years have past and the individuals who have seen “Much Ado About Nothing” can easily contrast and compare the Elizabethan society to today’s. Balthasar a musician sings, “Sigh no more, ladies, sigh no more, Men were deceivers ever, One foot in sea and one on shore, To one thing constant never. Then sigh not so, but let them go”(2.3 lines 64-71). What he is basically saying is that the ladies ought to accept men as deceivers and that men will always be horrible. Beatrice understands this concept quite well but ironically still marries Benedict. For Hero it is a different story, she fakes her death to embellish the feeling of remorse into Claudio but states that, ”One Hero died defiled, but I do live, / And surely as I live, I am a maid” (Act 5, Scene 4). Hero’s fake death was used to simply purify her name which goes to show just how different society was back…

    Much Ado is a play about love and comedy in a semi courtly setting in the small town of Messina, Italy. In comes the soldiers and everyone rejoices the women dress in their fine clothes in hopes of looking presentable. After all the excitement calmed a little and the women are dressed, they go and meet the soldiers as a household. Leonato whom is the father of Hero and uncle of Beatrice goes and welcomes Don Pedro, the prince, and his companions: Claudio, Benedick and Don John among others.
