Typewriter vs. Computer
"Typewriter Vs Computer"

If a student is ever put into a position where they have to select between an old fashion typewriter and a modern computer to write their essays for there professors at California State University, Fresno. The student will most likely select a modern computer instead of using an old fashion typewriter because the advantages of using a computer are far superior than those of a typewriter. While the value of a computer is more useful than those of the typewriter in a sense both are very similar but different in many aspects. One of those similarities is that they both have a keyboard for typing purposes a fact that accounts for the similarities between the two machines. If the student receives a special grant to purchase either a typewriter or a computer, if he has the intelligence of an average student he would probably consider buying the typewriter because it is less expensive than a computer. However, because of the differences in value a computer has more accessories enabling the student to advance both in his homework or even in his personal writing which makes them different. In contrast however, one of the benefits that the student may notice is that he may use the typewriter for filling out applications while the computer as far as everyone knows, does not have this function, which makes the typewriter have one advantage over the computer. Another difference between the writing machines is that if the student is typing a term paper with a typewriter and suddenly notices a mistake or perhaps he needs to make some changes such as erasing a letter, word or an entire line, he may do so. Consequently and unfortunately, however, if the typist has hit the function key "enter" in the typewriter then the typewriter will not be able to do the necessary corrections for him. On the other hand, if the student is typing his term paper with a computer he is most likely to give himself the luxury of erasing from one letter to the

In addition, not everyone agrees that technology has a positive impact on writing. In the article “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” (2008), Nicholas Carr argues that the easy accessibility of information on the Internet doesn’t benefit people much. Carr believes this because the information provided on the Internet does not require much effort to look up, which affects the ways we read, think, and write on certain subjects (Carr) It is not always true. In the article “Studies Explore Whether the Internet Makes Students Better Writers” (2009), he reports on findings to determine whether or not technology has a positive effect on student writing. He quotes Stanford student, Mr. Otuteye and his belief on the effect of technology on student writing.…

    1. How did American corporations change in the last decades of the nineteenth century? Why did these changes entail the introduction of more and more typists and typewriters? At the end of the 19th century US corporations underwent rapid growth and consolidation with the rise of modern industrial capitalism. Business operations became more complex, which required an increase in correspondence, record keeping, and office work within and between firms and, thus more clerical workers. This growth encouraged the introduction of typewriters and typists, because they allowed for a more efficient office, because it enabled faster writing, during a time in which office took on more and greater tasks.…

I will be comparing the two stories of David Gelernter and Sherry Turkle. Gelernter’s story explains why children who use computers in schools are not learning basic skills, while Turkle’s story tells why children who use computers in school are actually changing the way people think in life. I will be showing their similarities throughout my paper. Both Gelernter and Turkle talk about using computers in the school system. They both believe that this does not help anyone learn it just changes the way we think or stops kids from wanting to open a book and learn something for themselves.…

The article "Cursive Is a Powerful Brain Tool" claims that writing by hand helps students retain information better than typing. Though this may be true, a student can type more of the information on a computer than he or she would by writing it. Having more notes and more detailed information to look back on later would have to out weigh the benifit of absorbing the information thru writing it.…

In a journal entry from July, 1910, E. M. Forster wrote, "However gross my desires, I find that I shall never satisfy them for the fear of annoying others. I am glad to come across this much good in me. It serves instead of purity." Although Forster wrote this passage some two years after he published A Room with a View, it could have been written at almost anytime during his long life. However much he understood the "holiness of direct desire," the emotional purity one achieves by following the heart rather than social orthodoxy, he spent his youth and young adulthood, as Lucy Honeychurch nearly did, repressing his sexual desires to adhere to the expectations of society.…

“I cannot imagine how I would live without it.” These are the words uttered by countless teenagers and adults about the technology they use to enhance their daily lives. Writing notes and remembering information for the next day is long forgotten. Reading encyclopedias and using books for research papers seems nonexistent. Simple technological advancements have changed how people view the world. As a child of a modern age, technology has become an integral part of my everyday life. Writing has existed since before the year 0. Its evolution to what it has become today was made possible by the invention of the printing press, which made books easier and cheaper to produce, stimulating the spread of knowledge and writing. This first mechanical machine that helped expand access to learning and information has led to the establishment of the modern-day Internet. Although the Internet has improved upon the beneficial qualities of the primitive printing press remarkably, the printing press was much more revolutionary than the Internet. It caused literacy rates to increase drastically and made many world-changing revolutions possible as well. On the other hand, the Internet provides access to everything the printing press offers,…

The computer is the latest development in writing technology; a promises to change literary practices for better. Bonnie Laing, the author of the essay “An Ode to the User-Friendly Pencil” is strongly against the boycotting pencils. Computers could easily be known a teacher’s best friend, but if abused and overused, computers can also be harmful to the learning process overall. Today, computers are being used in the learning process in schools. From grade school, kids are being taught to use computers in their day to day academic studies. This is why many students now learn to type before they learn to write in cursive. Gelernter thinks that improper or uncontrolled use of computers may lead to decline in literacy and lack of basic skills. Computers have the ability and potential to accomplish great things. And Gelernter agrees that “Computers should be in the schools.”(186) Using the right software, computers have the power to attain a rewarding learning experience.…
