During the siege of Moorish Granada over 20,000 Spaniard soldiers died during and after the battle. 3,000 of these deaths were from the fight, but 17,000 were from the disease know as typhus. During WWI, soldiers were in close proximity of each other which was poor hygiene. This caused around 2-3 million soldiers to die of typhus, and in WWII it killed an estimated 20-30 million people. Not only did soldiers die, but the most famous well known Anne Frank died from typhus in a concentration camp. These accounts include descriptions of fever and red spots over arms, back, and chest. There is no current data on outbreaks about typhus, but it is not safe to assume that it will strike again when we less expect it. The group of Rickettsia was first discovered by Howard Taylor Ricketts, who later died of typhus, for the discovery of the Rickettsia prowazekii cell. …show more content…
Rickettsia typhi is a bacteria that is transferred from vectors (such as fleas or lice) to humans. The vectors have obtained the bacteria from animals like cats, rats, raccoons, opossums, and others well known. Through these animals, fleas vectors can incidentally infect humans. Rickettsia typhi is also known as “jail fever” or “Endemic typhus”. Rickettsia prowazekii is a more sever form of typhus which is also called “Epidemic typhus”. This is when few animals (usually rats) can incidentally infect large numbers of humans quickly under certain environmental conditions. These conditions can be: poor hygiene, poverty, crowded human living,
